Other leather manufacturers work with a product similar, called Bonded Leather. Bonded leather and recycled leather (while similar in the idea of leather scraps being reformed into solid pieces) differ in the process in which they are produced; recycled leather goes through extensive measures to ensure that its contents include no formaldehyde or high-levels of VOCs. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) refers to chemical compounds which have significant vapor pressures which can affect the environment and human health.

It is important to understand the chemicals that go into making these kinds of products. It is often the practice to add formaldehyde to leather products in order to maintain and preserve the properties which make the leather ideal. However, while these can ensure a nice sheen or luster, but often at the cost of emitting strong chemicals into a residence or commercial property. VOCs are regulated, especially for indoors where concentrations can be highest. VOCs are typically not acutely toxic but have chronic effects.

Recycled leather is available in glue-down formats (suitable for floors and walls) or atop a UniClic® interlocking plank system (floating floors.) Floating floors are able to be installed and taken apart (for re-installation later) with no attachment to the underneath substrate floor. Floating floors are consistent with recycled leather in the mission of sustainability, because this locking system requires no install glue -- thus making for a chemical-free "green" product.

• Made from at least 60% pre-consumer recycled materials;

• Dampens sounds to 90%+ of condo standards;

• Certified and tested to be low-VOC & made of rapidly renewable materials

• HDF, marine-grade core material made from pre-consumer wood, with no added formaldehyde;

• Made with EasyCare™ water-based finishes with a resistance comparable to cork or linoleum;

• Packaged using recycled materials.
