You've been bitten by the grow your own organic veg bug and are patting yourself on the back as the plants you raised from seed start to bear fruit. All that hard work and careful nurturing is rewarding you with faster-than-you-can-pick 'em courgettes and more beans than you can find a new recipe for. Then you have a busy couple of weeks, go on holiday and before you know it the crop has gone unpicked and mouldy. Returning your attention to the veg plot you quickly tidy it away, removing all evidence of your profligacy. A little bit of guilt remains. You know what effort it took to grow the crop, the manuring, the sowing, watering and transplanting, and finally the massive effort of picking became just too much!
Bananas.
If you think your waste record is bad the scale of wasted bananas in countries where people do still starve might put things in perspective. Why is good food wasted in this way? In a word, standardization. It is the need for the produce to conform to standards of size and shape and for them to be blemish-free that leads to perfectly edible bananas being dumped by the ports to rot.
Legislation, regulation and the might of supermarket purchasing power all play their part in this travesty of food waste. Whole fields of crops can be left to rot in situ if they don't make the grade. Not just bananas.
Decadence = state of decay, degenerate. Decadence is more usually thought of in the context of French sun kings and Roman orgiastic feasts but on the world stage the Western world is, frankly, decadent. As a nation the UK puts enough food in the bin each year to feed a small country. The weekly shop at the mega-super-duper market may take less time out of a busy week but the price paid is in a full bin of, sometimes unopened, produce. The mega-super-duper sized bins at the back of the store are filled with the other side of the waste line.
Here's where you're doing so much better than them by even trying to grow your own -- you'll doubtless be composting your gone-overs. You may even be canny enough to say you intended to grow some extra for next year's seed and leave them growing whereas the supermarket waste has been buried in landfill holes in the ground, producing methane (a greenhouse gas worse than carbon dioxide). Now supermarkets are claiming green credentials by starting to send the waste to bio-digesters (which can produce energy) and landfill sites are starting to harness the methane as a fuel but this doesn't account for the fact that land is being used to grow food that isn't being eaten.
Imagine peasants live in a third world country. Nurturing, fertilising, watching the crop grow, picking and... mould. And not just mould that will help compost the wasted food into food for the soil but mould sitting outside a port, miles from where it was grown. Meanwhile you're watching people you know go hungry. It's enough to make you pick your beans! The importance of returning any crop waste to the land can't be emphasized enough. If all the waste -- the stems, leaves, fruit, is composting, the fertility of the land can be maintained. Growing the crop for fat cats thousands of miles away means not only do they get your produce, they get your waste and ultimately your land's fertility. This has to made up for with imported fertilizers, which have to be paid for, unlike free compost, and a cycle of debt ensues.
A strain of fertility continually being lost to us comes from waste that is cooked food, fats, grains, oils, meat, fish and sometimes dairy. Horticultural advice is to keep them out of your compost because they may attract vermin but there are plenty of 'closed' and secure systems on the market and just a little information on how to prevent unwanted visitors even knowing about your compost heap can mean the waste items can provide you with more compost and more fertility for next year's crop.
Every time you add compost to your soil you help to sequester carbon, which means keeping it safely on the ground and not adding to the greenhouse effect. You may miss the odd crop as the 100 metre hurdle that is modern life takes you out of your garden for longer than you'd like but let's face it, you're making a darn sight better attempt at doing your bit than many. Go on, have a pat on the back and think about the virtues of growing perennial crops which don't have to sown every year but that's another story.
