Keeping Chickens - Tips To Help You Get Started
Keeping chickens can be a lot of fun if you are properly prepared, you have enough space, some extra money and a little extra time. I decided to start keeping chickens a few years ago and I have never regretted it.
However, like anyone that jumps in feet first without doing their research, I made a lot of mistakes at first because I didn't look up any chicken information before I started. I don't want anyone to go through the troubles that I had when I got my first chicks. So let's discuss some of the things you need to consider before you ever buy your first chick.
Make sure that your area allows you to keep chickens in your backyard? Some areas have very strict rules and regulations that forbid you to have chickens at all. Some communities do allow you to keep hens but not roosters. There are other communities that are more than happy to allow you to keep a small number of chickens but a specific number of animals will be specified. You need to find out what is allowed in your area because it would be terrible to have to find new homes for any chickens you already acquired.
While keeping chickens is not extremely expensive, money is required especially in the initial start up. Chickens aren't picky about where they live but you will have to be able to provide a secure coop of some sort to house them in. If you don't have a building that you can convert for their use, you will have to build something. There are also certain things that you will need like feeders, waters, heat lamps, etc. that have to be bought but will last for a long time if taken care of. You will also have to buy food for your flock. Check your finances carefully and go to some of the local feed stores in your area to see if they carry what you need. I will cost more sometimes if you have to pay to have items shipped to you.
The size of your chicken coop will depend on how many chickens you are going to keep and how large of a building you can afford to construct. Also, if you plan to keep your chickens locked up in an area, standard guidelines say that each chicken needs about three square feet of space. But you won't need as large of an area if you are going to be keeping your chickens as free range animals. The more hens you have, the more space you will need.
You will also need some space to store all of the things you need for keeping your chickens. Keep in mind that you will have to keep, cedar bedding, lighting equipment for winter on hand and anything else that you might need. If you don't have a storage area, you will need to build one.
Before you build your chicken coop, figure out the best place to locate it. The area you choose should be sunny but should also have shade so your hens don't bake when they are laying eggs. The drainage around the area should also be taken into consideration because you don't want water to pond or run through this area. Chickens need to be kept dry or they will get sick and possibly diet.
