Collecting coins is a hobby shared by many persons. Some are glad to have a small collection of old coins, other take this hobby to the limit by enriching their collection with ancient coins or with coins made of precious metals.

China Mint decided to create this coin in honor of the Giant Panda bears which are an endangered species and the symbol of China. In 1982 they issued the first edition of Panda coins having different weights and values and the image of the bear on the reverse. To make this coin even more attractive China Mint decided to change the picture of the bears each year. They even minted proof coin sets for the passionate collectors. The image of the bears changed from the one with the bear sitting and eating bamboo leaves to the one with a Panda mom and her cub or the one with the two bears enjoying their meal. The design is very detailed and it captures real scenes from the lives of the lovely Giant Pandas. On the other side there is an image of The Temple of Heaven in Beijing.
Collectors are waiting for next year's edition with impatience. When the decision was made to freeze the design of the obverse of the coin they didn't agree to it. For only two years the design remained the same and then China Mint resumed issuing different Panda images on the gold and silver coins.
