Under the gold coin standard, certain weight and fitness are the standard monetary units.
Many countries were on a gold coin standard until 1914. One such country is the United States which continued to operate on such standard until 1933. Thus, the nature and operation of this standard may be illustrated by reference to that of the United states during those years cited, as follows:
a. The monetary unit, known as the dollar, was defined as 25.8 grains of gold, nine-tenths fine,* or 23.33 grains of fine gold.
b. Gold coins were made legal tender, that is, an offer to pay a debt in gold coins constitutes a legally satisfactory offer to discharge a financial obligation. Thus, gold coins circulated freely from one hand to another.
c. There is is free coinage. The right of free coinage entitled any holder of gold bullion to have it coined into standard coins without any quantitative limit. Charges collected for such minting in excess of actual minting costs, with a resulting profit to mint is termed seignior-age.
d. There were no restrictions on the use of gold. Gold could thus be used either as money or as a commodity in the arts and industry. Moreover, it could move freely from the arts and industry to money, and vice-versa. Furthermore, there were no restrictions upon imports and export of gold in the settlement of international obligations.
e. All bills and other kinds of money were redeemable in their equivalents in terms of gold coins.
In this connection, certain comments and observations have been made with respect to the adoption and operations, a number of which are discussed below.
