In today's world the most preventable cause of death is tobacco use. 5 million people die each year around the world because of tobacco use. If this trend keeps up, we can expect about 8 million people to die from tobacco use by the year 2030.
Each year about one in five people die from tobacco use or second hand smoke in the United States. Tobacco smokers end up dieing on average about 13 to 14 years earlier than non smokers.

Cigarette use costs billions of dollars every year in the United States. Over 210 billion dollars in health care expenditures, death, and lost productivity.
Here is some interesting facts about current tobacco use by adults in the United States in 2009. 20.6% of all adults smoke. 23.3% of American Indian's smoke, 22.1% of white adults, 21.3% of African American's, 14.5% of Hispanic's, and 12% of Asian American's.
Many people begin smoking every day. About 1,000 kids younger than 18 and 1,800 adults begin smoking every day.
Most smokers really want to quit. About 70% of smokers want to stop smoking and about 45% of smokers try and quit each year.
