Field strong at rich Singapore Open
With a field that includes the current US Open and USPGA Champion, last week's HSBC Championship winner, the world number three and four, seven Ryder Cuppers and two of the game's most exciting young stars in Asian Tour money leader, Noh Seung-yul, and Matteo Manassero, the Barclays Singapore Open is the pre-eminent event in world golf this week.
The US$6 million event is co-sanctioned between the European and Asian Tours and is being played at the Sentosa Golf Club on Sentosa Island off Singapore.
Martin Kaymer and Phil Mickelson at number three and four in the world ranking head the field in that respect but defending champion Ian Poulter and Padraig Harrington, the latter of whom appears close to producing a big tournament (Titleist Vokey Spin Milled Black Nickel Wedge), provide even further substance.
Molinari's win in China last week was so impressive it is hard to imagine he will not be a threat again although backing up after such a mentally demanding week where he led from start to finish could be a factor.
Graeme McDowell was only (NIKE Victory Red Forged Wedge) average last week but he did win in Spain recently and as the US Open Champion and the world number ten he deserves every consideration.
Another who appears to be playing his way into winning form is Adam Scott who enjoys an outstanding record in Singapore having won in 2005 and 2006. Scott also finished in a share of third last year(Titleist AP1 710 Irons). The Queenslander appears on the verge of a big week and a return to one of his favourite hunting grounds in Singapore might just provide it.
The clash between this week's event and the Australian Masters in Melbourne has robbed both events of some potential stars but the Australians in this week's field will not be too concerned about missing their home tour event as this week's huge prize-money could potentially change their careers.
Richard Green is a former winner of the Australian Masters but in the form he is in of late then he stands a good chance of taking out a major portion of the US$6 million pool. Green finished tied for 6th last week a few weeks after winning in Portugal.
Marcus Fraser still has a chance of securing (Titleist Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 1.5 Putter) the Asian Tour money list title with a big week and Andrew Dodt looks to finish off a breakthrough year. Scott Strange, Mark Brown, Scott Hend, Marcus Both, Mark Purser, Rick Kulacz, Darren Beck, David Gleeson, Adam Blyth, Scott Barr, Tony Carolan, Unho Park, Gavin Flint Kunal Bhasin, Brad Smith and Richard Moir are all in the field.
Scott Hend has likely clocked up more flying miles than anyone of late. He has played in Japan, Scotland, Malaysia and the US of late. He finished tied for third in this event last year.
