Just one hour outside of Melbourne, the coastal retreats of Dromana, Rye, and Rosebud are well known for their tranquil beaches and fabulous golf clubs.
Many Melbourne families make an annual pilgrimage to Rye each summer. With the laid back atmosphere and safe swimming beaches, it's easy to understand why Rye is such a popular destination. Every budget can find accommodation, whether it be free camping on the beach or the softest bed in a luxury resort.
Sandbars extending hundreds of metres from the shore make for calm waters, and families take advantage, coming in droves each day from the city. You'll want to be sure to see the Octopus' Garden underwater marine trail that runs beneath Rye Pier. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, charter a catamaran and set sail for points far out of the bay. Gentle winds will carry your vessel only as far as you feel comfortable. If you're after great surfing, Gunnamatta Ocean Beach is one of the premier spots in all of Victoria. If you are traveling with the family, don't miss the Rosebud Family Festival, held each year during the last weekend in November. It's a great community event that brings all of Rye together.
You'll also want to take the time to go shopping on Point Nepean Road, which features a large shopping mall that's sure to have everything you require for your vacation. After you're done browsing, stop for a glass of coffee or wine in of the chic cafes that give Rye its unique, cosmopolitan vibe. Things can become a bit more tense with competition on the region's golf courses, like Moonah Links and the Dunes Golf Course.
For those with a green thumb, Rye is a dream destination. In particular, Heronswood is well known for its beautiful gardens and sweeping vistas of Port Phillip Bay. Two great times to visit are March and November, which both play host to the Heronswood Garden Festival. For even more gardens, take a tour of McCrae Homestead, one of Victoria's first country homes.
Only an hour from Melbourne along the Nepean Highway, Rye is a great place to get away from the city.

Rugby Union in Victoria $79.66 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Rugby union in Victoria describes the sport of rugby union being played and watched in the state of Victoria in Australia. The code was first introduced some time between the 1850s and 1880s but failed to gain popular following and has had a potted history. Official Australian Bureau of Statistics report of 2007 on sports participation, Victoria has a very low participation in rugby union (less than 1). The game is played by a small number of amateur senior clubs and in some private schools in Melbourne. However international rugby matches are popular with spectators in Victoria. This is evidenced by the large crowds which attended matches at the 2003 Rugby World Cup, 2006 Commonwealth Games and overall television ratings for blockbuster internationals.
