Italian Honeymoon - A Romantic Day II
Rome Day II
We decided over breakfast that day two of our italian honeymoon would combine visits to the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain (Fontana di Trevi). So, armed with our trusty out-of-scale tourist map we set off for the Colosseum. Who would've thought that a piece of architecture of that size could be so hard to find. The map was starting to grate on me... you see, each attraction was marked by a large drawing, so large that it hid the surrounding road names. We stopped for a moment to rest and check the map again. Surely the Colosseum hadn't moved overnight! We knew it was there somewhere, as we had seen it from the window of the aeroplane the day before.
Just then, as if by magic whilst studying the map at a junction of three roads, the gigantic Gladiator ring appeared from behind a row of buildings. We stood for a few moments, in silent awe of such a magnificent piece of history. I was taken back in time... it reminded me of my first school trip as a young boy to Colchester Castle, in Essex UK, another historic Roman building.
As we made our way into the arena itself we were filled with feelings of excitement and exhilaration, perhaps just as it was for spectators and Gladiators (along with overwhelming fear, I would imagine) all those years ago. Photo opportunities were a plenty, with guides dressed as Roman Gladiators, ruins and the Arch of Constantine (Arco di Costantino) all within easy reach of the Colosseum.
Lunchtime again and yet another three course meal, becoming a bit of a habit by this point. Every meal began with a practical decision to order just one course, but one look at the menu and the temptation of the selection of starters got the better of us once again. And of course, a plate of parma ham and melon just fuels your appetite for more... a meal of pasta, pizza and the glorious dessert Tiramisu followed. Delicious.
Now the dreaded map came into use again, although this time it wasn't really needed. As we stumbled (after our gorgeous lunch) through the streets of Rome we came upon a huge crowd of tourists gathered around an opening. The sound of running water could be heard, and as we climbed the steps of an adjacent building we turned to see the Trevi Fountain in all its splendour and theatrical presence.
Unfortunately for us, there was no chance of a romantic honeymoon picture as another coach load of tourists arrived, with more sure to follow shortly. We decided to return in the morning and headed off to the hotel to ready ourselves for, yes you've guessed it, another three course meal at a restaurant recommended by the hotel concierge.
We found we could really pile on the pounds in Rome, both pounds in weight on the scales and pounds, or in this case Euros, on our credit card. The Italian food was not overpriced... we just loved it and found it impossible to resist!
The Italians sure know how to cook and eat their food. One tip we learnt is that the Italian families seemed to go out to restaurants later at night than us English, so going for an early table would avoid disappointment as whole families tended to arrive on mass later in the evening, even in the week.
What's more, on this particular evening we got back to our hotel room in time to witness the most spectacular electric storm I have ever seen. There are some things that will stick in my memory from this honeymoon, and standing with my wife at an open window in Rome, watching bolts of lightning illuminate the city nightscape is one of them.
Our dream Italian honeymoon continued...
