Not many people are familiar with coin grading. But for collectors this is a crucial thing in numismatics. Some consider it to be a science, some an art, because of the fine work and the skills a collector must have. For coin collectors, understanding the value of a coin is very important.
The value of coins is established by their grades. There are different systems of grading coins, starting from the oldest one where only two types of coins were distinguished. This way in the beginning coins collectors had either new or used coins. Then they added in a third grade and coins were scaled as good, fine and Uncirculated. The last one was obviously the most valuable one. It consisted of coins that were very close to their state at the mint.
Nowadays there is a larger scale according to which coins are being graded. US and Europe use different scales, but similarities are very high. One of the first well known coin grading systems was the Sheldon grading system. This scale runs from 0 to 70, where 70 means that the coin is perfect. In what concerns the European adjectival grading system, the scale runs from Good to Brilliant Uncirculated, names being different from one country to another. There is a percentage of design remaining ion the coin for each category. For the first scale, the lowest one-Good, the percentage is one of 10, then come Very Good, Fine, Very fine, Extra Fine, About Uncirculated, Uncirculated and Brilliant Uncirculated, where there is 100% design remaining and full luster.
Coin grading, besides helping decide the value, can also help making the right choice for the price paid. But not only is that classification important, there are many other factors that may change the value of a coin, especially when talking about golden coins. Due to the world financial crisis, the best way to make sure your wealth is not threatened, is to buy gold bullion.
