Fool's gold (pyrite) is found in ore deposits of gold, and has been used by confidence men as a trade item to fleece greedy victims. The victims exchange their assets of real value for an asset (fool's gold) they perceive has potential for much greater value.
Prior to the 21st century fool's gold was always a tangible item that could be tested. The tests based upon sound scientific principle and performed by an independent party were never questioned.. The first decade of this century has seen the creation of a new phenomenon - ETFs. Exchange traded funds are intangible items representing tangible commodities purportedly securely stored away for the owner of the ETF unit. A gold EFT certifies that 400 ounces of gold are being held in a bonded storage unit. Each share represents 10% of the stored bullion. This is the Rolls-Royce of convenience for investors who wish to own gold. However, just as the Rolls-Royce car has been represented as only for the rich, and not as a wise investment, gold ETFs may have the same standing.
The Rolls-Royce has been tested and retested for decades. It is a tangible of known value. Gold ETFs have not been tested in a true financial crisis. Just as the mortgage financial instruments such as CDOs,etc. were proven to be asset confetti, commodity ETFs may make one forget Bernie Madoff!
Until we experience a real stress test exchange traded funds, especially gold bullion, should be for price speculation only The only insurance for financial collapse should be gold and silver bars, gold and silver coins, or collectible gold and silver coins. Tangible possession always delivers stress relief to the owner. Do not let greed shred your asset peace of mind.
A stress test is guaranteed to come at some moment in the future. We don't know if it will be caused by a black swan or financial hogs. After the test everyone will see who the real fools are!
