Uncirculated silver dollars are one way to invest in precious metals. This type of bullion is generally in the form of government-minted $1 coins of one ounce.999 silver. The $1 denomination is in name only; one-ounce silver coins are worth the spot price of silver bullion plus a few dollars. Thus a $1 Silver Liberty dollar, $1 Canadian Maple Leaf and $1 Mexican Libertad, which are each once ounce of.999 pure silver bullion, are worth over $30 apiece as of November 2010.
In addition to silver liberty coins, the U.S. Mint issues silver commemorative coins, such as the 2010 Boy Scouts of America and 2010 Disabled Veterans uncirculated silver dollars. In 2011, the commemorative coins are of honor and U.S. Army. These are all made up of 90% silver and 10% copper and also have a face value of $1. They are not as valuable as the.999 silver $1 coins due to the addition of copper to the metal.
The U.S. mint sells the commemorative coins with a surcharge, such as $10 more per coin than the metal value, to fund programs, museums, or the like associated with the coin commemorates. For example, the $10 surcharge per silver Medal of honor coin will go to the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.
Once purchased, uncirculated silver dollars can be held in one's possession. Some people prefer to keep them in bank safety deposit boxes, but this is a costly option and not really necessary. As long as one's collection is modest and well secured or hidden in the home, there is little risk of theft if nobody knows you own the coins.
The coins discussed here -- bullion coins and 90% silver commemorative coins -- are so much more valuable than their face value, none of them are actually circulated for currency the ways regular coins are used for purchasing goods and services. Instead, they are held by collectors and investors.
This is not to say the coins remain untarnished and perfect, unless they are sealed at the mint. While uncirculated, silver coins may have scratches, smudges or signs of wear and tarnish if they have handled frequently or without care.
Because the value of silver bullion is primarily found in the metal, there is not much difference in value in the bullion coins, whether they have a small mark or not. Collectors are often more particular about the appearance of the commemorative issues, but when they are appraised for their silver worth, minor cosmetic blemishes are of no concern.
