Authorized by Congress in 1792, the United States Mint is our country's exclusive producer of legal tender coins. It's main mission is to generate an adequate quantity of circulating coinage for the United States to conduct its commerce and trade. The United States Mint also manufactures proof, uncirculated and commemorative coins, including Gold Congressional Medals and platinum, silver and gold bullion coins.
Among the most popular coins that are put out by the Mint are the coins that are produced for it's American Gold, Silver and Platinum Eagle Coin Programs. From the time of it's initial release back in nineteen-eighty-six, it's four sizes, the one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce and one-tenth ounce denominations have developed into the world's most widely traded and highly regarded gold bullion coins. They are sought after by coin collectors worldwide and recognized as one of the finest purchases that a potential bullion investor or coins collector can possibly make.
The attractive and classic design of the American Gold Eagle coin is showcased in the graceful Striding Liberty Coin, which was first created by Augustus Saint Gaudens for the United States Double Gold Eagle. The reverse displays a nest that contains a female American eagle with her hatchlings, suggestive of the strength and security of the American family.
The American Gold Eagle is considered to be among one of the best options for both new and experienced gold bullion investors, as these are the only bullion coins guaranteed for weight, content, and purity by the United States government. Currently, only gold that is mined here in America is used in the production of the coin.
Because of the record demand for this past year for American Eagle Coins, the United States Mint suspended the manufacture of the uncirculated and proof editions of these coins in 2009. The remaining coin blanks have instead been allocated to the American Gold Eagle coin program as stated by Public Laws 99-61 and 99-185. Both laws direct the agency to produce these coins in numbers sufficient to satisfy public demand. The uncirculated and proof versions of the American Eagle Gold and Silver Proof Coins are currently not required by any law.
The Mint is working diligently with it's current manufacturers of coin blanks to step up the stock of coin bullion blanks, so that it can offer to the public the proof and uncirculated editions of gold, silver and platinum American Eagle coins next year. Collectors and precious metals investors alike will be eagerly awaiting any further announcements on the situation in the coming months.
James Kirkwood is is a longtime coin collector, who's interests include collecting Gold Proof Eagle Coins, and also Gold Proof Eagle Sets. These beautiful coins can make an excellent addition to an investment portfolio that includes precious metals, making a perfect compliment to traditional stocks and bonds.
