When you need to research into the history of money the gold standard appears to be a very important part of it. Although it is no longer used in the present days, it was a system which influenced a lot the economy of the world.
Basically, the gold standard represents an agreement of several countries to establish a certain value for their national currency related to a certain amount of gold. This meant that any coin or banknote could be exchanged automatically in its equivalent in gold. The only condition was to mint just as many coins, and to only print banknotes according to the national reserve of gold. All the gold owned by a certain country had an equivalent in currency.
This system worked in one way or another for several years, in countries throughout the world. It allowed them to maintain a certain economical stability, but this also meant that economical development was just as bad as economical crisis. Once the economy raised, the national reserve stayed the same which lead to smaller costs of production, because the same operations which needed to be done to make a product were repeated in making several products now.
Throughout the time the gold standard had different manifestations. It was first of all the gold specie standard in the Byzantine Empire. In the nineteenth century it became the gold exchange standard, when different countries, like the British India, established the value of their silver coins in relation to the gold standards in the United Kingdom and the USA. The last one was the gold bullion standard which stated that gold bullion could be sold at a fixed price.
Nowadays the gold standard is no longer possible due to the fact that the economical increase and demand for money can not be translated in the amount of gold owned by countries. The national reserves of gold have remained mainly the same, with very little changes. Still one has to admit to the big advantage of those systems: they limited the power of the governments to raise the inflation rate.
