The latest health concern in the United States and the world has been the Swine flu, labeled H1N1 influenza. This particular strain of flu was of special concern because it began spreading during the spring and summer months, which are not typical flu season months. Additionally many of the fatalities from this disease occurred in people aged 20-40 years old. For now the CDC and WHO believe that we have avoided an immediate large scale outbreak, but this may not last, especially as we approach the normal flu season months.
Now the big question is; how are we going to prevent a large scale infection from the swine flu in the future.
Most doctors and health professionals recommend the same steps we take to prevent every other disease. These actions include washing your hands regularly for at least 15 seconds, avoid direct contact with sick people and if you are sick stay home. We are also advised to limit travel to places where the swine flu is more prevalent, especially in Mexico and places in the US in close proximity to the Mexican border.
On a large scale we need to be proactive by sanitizing high traffic areas both in public places and in businesses. However we need to be mindful of the chemicals used to disinfect these high risk areas because it is the use of these products that has spawned the mutation of MRSA and other superbugs that have become antibiotic resistant.
Traditional chemical cleaners also leave residues and create high levels of carcinogens and are not always properly removed after cleaning. In addition, manual cleaning methods leave a lot of room for human error and improper handling of chemicals. There are also chemical sprayer options that advertise the ability to sanitize an entire area and disinfect. However these chemical compounds create carcinogens when they are used, and while they may not be harmful in an immediate sense they are not healthy. Our best option is using high concentration ozone gas. It is stronger than chlorine bleach and all natural.
Recently the application of ozone has been proven effective to inactivate the H1N1 Swine flu virus. See this CNN story [http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/marketwire/0497787.htm]. Additionally ozone has been tested in the past and found to successfully eliminate over 99.99% of other harmful bacteria and viruses including; MRSA, E. Coli, Salmonella and Strep.
Ozone is also applied in gaseous form allowing it to contact more surfaces than traditional cleaning methods and cleans all surfaces in any facility, not just those that are exposed like chemical spray cleaners. Another benefit to using ozone as a disinfectant and sanitizing agent is that ozone reverts to pure oxygen after a short amount of time, usually less than 30 minutes in normal conditions and leaves no residue or chemical by products.
Ozone is already in use around the world to clean drinking water, and is used to sanitize most bottled water. It is also used in the food storage industry to increase the shelf life of meats, poultry and vegetables.
As an all natural alternative to chemical cleaners ozone is the answer to keep an environmentally friendly approach to a swine flu pandemic.
