If a child has been diagnosed with diabetes (and in this article the word "diabetes" stands for type 1 diabetes, although much in this article is equally applicable to type 2 diabetes), as a baby, things start to get a little easier at primary school age, as the child can give feedback to the parents and medical team as to how they feel.

This is particularly true for nipping hypoglycaemia in the bud before an episode takes place. In fact, this is the time when blood sugar levels need to be properly monitored and controlled to avoid the possible health complications in later life.

However, ensuring your child not only eats appropriate food when at school, but also has a snack mid morning and mid afternoon to keep blood glucose levels stable.

The problems that the child may have are largely as a result of peer pressure, and sometimes a lack of knowledge on behalf of the teaching staff.

In the first instance, the child wants to be accepted by his or her peers. Eating foods that are suitable for a diabetic may mean feeling a little apart from their friends, who may also be pressurising the child to eat sweets and sugary drinks. It may well be that the child abandons their diet plan altogether so that they "fit in".

The most dangerous aspect of this, is that taken to the extreme, the child may be able to monitor their blood sugar and insulin injections themselves, and insist that they do it unsupervised. The potential problem here is that they may then not do this when at school, so it is important that parents remain involved with the monitoring and injecting at home.

It may well be that with the advent of mixed insulins, where there is a combination of long and short acting insulins, the child's doctor can prescribe such a mixture that means that injecting during school hours is unnecessary.

Children with diabetes are afforded some protection in the UK under the Diabetes and the Disability Discrimination Act of 1995, which provides, amongst other things, that children cannot be discriminated against at school without justification, and must be allowed full participation in all aspects of education including sports and school trips, including trips abroad.

Schools must also make provision for blood sugar monitoring, insulin administration, snack taking and visits to the toilet.

Even though these things are enshrined in UK law, it is also a good idea to talk to the school so that they are aware that your child has diabetes, and make sure the school understands what special measures and allowances may be needed, and especially what to do in the event of a hypoglycaemic episode.
