July 4 is next weekend. I get a lump in my throat when the Star Spangled Banner is played or the American Flag elegantly flows in the wind. I believe freedom and the ability to chose is the common stirring within virtually every soul on the planet. Democracies celebrate independence...other forms of government are distant proxies. Courageous leaders can learn the secrets of our Declaration of Independence.
When the colonists of North America decided that they were fed up with abuse and taxation from the government of Great Britain, they formally stated their opinion and their intentions in a letter to the King which today is known as the Declaration of Independence. The journey to declaring independence implored citizens to confront their fears, focus with clarity on what they wanted and moved forward with inner courage.
There are 56 signers to the Declaration of Independence. The first, largest and most famous signature is that of John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress. The youngest signer was Edward Rutledge {age 26}. Benjamin Franklin {age 70} was the oldest. Two future presidents signed: John Adams {second president} and Thomas Jefferson {third president}.
A vision that all men are created equal!
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
It's amazing how similar a Declaration of Independence is with leadership in organizations. The country has just witnessed a period of abuse and arrogance by too many in business leadership. Are employees and customers any different than the original signers John Adams, Thomas Jefferson's and Benjamin Franklin? Do they seek anything more than life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Are some business leaders more like King George or Thomas Jefferson?
Organizations that "get it" will move as fast as they can to create a spirit of independence. The payoff is huge. Just look at the U.S. as a beacon of freedom and independence to citizens of the world. Like the colonist the path requires courage...elegant courage to choose.
