How to install a ceiling fan
Ceiling fans are one luxury that you and your house can not afford not to have. They can circulate the air, keeping it from feeling stale in your home. This circulated air can help to keep your rooms cooler in the summer months and warmer in the winter months, depending on which direction you have your fan set to turn. Many ceiling fans are also equipped with light fixtures which give you great overhead lighting when you need it.
Ceiling fans are not as hard as one would first imagine installing, especially if you are going to install one with existing wiring and mounting for a light fixture. That is why most homes have them. All you have to do is follow some simple instructions and viola you have a great addition to your room that you can proudly say I installed myself.
If you wish to try installing one yourself, start by reading these simple steps and see how easy it can be, even for you to install a beautiful and functional fan.
Step one:
Choose a fan that you like and buy it. Keep the size of the room in mind, along with the color scheme, etc. You should also keep in mind whether people will have enough distance to walk underneath it without hitting the blades.
Step two:
You will begin by shutting off the power to the circuit, where you will be installing the fan. You do not want to be electrocuted.
Step three:
Remove the old light fixture and possibly fan. You will begin this procedure by taking out any and all light bulbs. Then you will want to take down the mounting brackets and carefully remove the light itself.
Step four:
Disconnect the wiring from the light fixture.
Step five:
Now get your new fan out of the box. Be sure to look and read the instructions that come with the fan. Every fan is assembled a bit differently.
Step six:
You may have to slip the ceiling cover over the wires. Do this carefully.
Step seven:
Now you will probably have to secure the blades to the light fixture or to the fan. Make sure all nuts and bolts are tight before hanging.
Step eight:
After your blades are secure, you will want to secure the hanging bracket onto the fan. Most fans come with all the nuts and bolts you will need to this. Again, make sure they are tight when you are finished.
Step nine:
Now carefully, hold the fan up to the ceiling to do your wiring. Remember it is all about color coding.
The black wire on the fan attaches to the black wire on the ceiling and the same goes for the white.
Step ten:
Ground the fan. This is done with the usually green or bare copper wire. You will want to ground both the fan and the metal box.
Step eleven:
Once the wiring is finished, you can attach the fan to the mounting assembly onto the ceiling.
Step twelve:
Turn on the fan and see if it is balanced. It one side seems to unbalanced, a cute trick is to try taping a small eraser or something of the kind to the top of one blade. See if that helps. Now all you have to do is brag about what an easy job it was to install your ceiling fan and enjoy it.
