The dime or ten cents, but not the smallest in value, is currently the smallest corner in size of the United States.
It may seem strange the dime is smaller than the hundred, whose nominal value is only 10% of the tithe. The reason for this relates to the metal that was originally used to produce of dimes - money - is much more valuable than copper, the metal originally used for cents.
The origin of the parts Currency of the United States were made of gold, silver or copper. Among the coins struck at the mint of origin United States Philadelphia, tithing was smaller than the copper one cent and half cent, smaller than the silver dollar, half dollar and quarter dollar, and smaller than gold (eagle) Eagle, Eagle half (five one-dollar coin), and neighborhood Eagle (two hundred fifty dollars each).
Interestingly, tithing was not the smallest piece size during these early years because there was a nickel silver called half a Dime which was even lower. The half dime is considered the first regular issue U.S. currency.
Other parts smaller than the dime were the three pieces of silver and gold one hundred one-dollar coin, both produced in half the 19th century. The public has been very critical of each of these parts. They were just too small. And it was not just a question of convenience.
These tiny, but value (in terms of purchasing power at the time) parts were easily lost. At a time where even one cent could fund a significant purchase, just imagine the regret of having lost three cents, five cents, or worse, a dollar!
It is not surprising that very small pieces have finally retired without being replaced. Nevertheless, these pieces are very collectible. Top specimens quality has a quality almost jewelry. And one can only admire the precision required to manufacture these tiny rooms, each bearing a replica accurate, although much reduced from the original design.

I've collected coins since age 11 -- so, more than half a century. Coins have been a pleasant distraction over the years. Though I've never been a coin dealer, I have occasionally sold a coin or two at a nice profit, when the market was right. These experiences have taught me a bit about coin value in the marketplace. But I have to say that my greatest pleasure with coins has been the hooks they have to history and other areas of learning. And, I can never quite get beyond the feeling that, if any of my coins could talk, the stories would be priceless!

The Ten-Cent Plague $9.99 In the years between World War II and the emergence of television as a mass medium, American popular culture as we know it was first created--in the pulpy, boldly illustrated pages of comic books. No sooner had this new culture emerged than it was beaten down by church groups, community bluestockings, and a McCarthyish Congress--only to resurface with a crooked smile on its face in Mad magazine. The story of the rise and fall of those comic books has never been fully told--until The Ten-Cent Plague . David Hajdu's remarkable new book vividly opens up the lost world of comic books, its creativity, irreverence, and suspicion of authority. When we picture the 1950s, we hear the sound of early rock and roll. The Ten-Cent Plague shows how--years before music--comics brought on a clash between children and their parents, between prewar and postwar standards. Created by outsiders from the tenements, garish, shameless, and often shocking, comics spoke to young people and provided the guardians of mainstream culture with a big target. Parents, teachers, and complicit kids burned comics in public bonfires. Cities passed laws to outlaw comics. Congress took action with televised hearings that nearly destroyed the careers of hundreds of artists and writers. The Ten-Cent Plague radically revises common notions of popular culture, the generation gap, and the divide between "high" and "low" art. As he did with the lives of Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington (in Lush Life ) and Bob Dylan and his circle (in Positively 4th Street ), Hajdu brings a place, a time, and a milieu unforgettably back to life. |
