Special Olympics North Carolina Receives Support From the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro
Raleigh, N.C.— The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro has awarded a grant to Special Olympics North Carolina in order to further Special Olympics athlete and coach recruitment and sports training and competition opportunities for the Special Olympics Guilford/Greensboro local program, according to Keith L. Fishburne, SONC president/CEO.
The grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro totaled $5,000. The grant will be used by Special Olympics North Carolina to support Special Olympics Guilford/Greensboro athletes training and competing in their choice of 19 sports offered by the local program. The Guilford/Greensboro local program will use the funds to provide sports equipment, access to training facilities and recruit new volunteer coaches and general volunteers to work alongside the athletes.
“We are very appreciative of the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro’s continued support of our mission,” said Fishburne. “This generous donation will positively impact hundreds of lives and strengthen the Guilford/Greensboro local program and Greensboro community as well.”
Special Olympics North Carolina offers year-round sports training and competition for more than 38,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. These athletes inspire greatness through their success and provide motivation to the thousands of coaches, sports officials, local program committee members and event organizers involved in Special Olympics statewide. SONC offers Olympic-type competition in 20 sports on local and state levels. It is the second largest Special Olympics program in North America in terms of athlete participation.

The 1908 Olympics $7 The 1908 London Olympics can claim to be the first ‘modern’ sporting event which pitted nation against nation. There were rows between the British and Americans; a one-man walkover in the 400 metres when the US runners boycotted the event; a dispute over the shoes worn by one of the British tug of war teams and when the American team failed to dip their flag in front of King Edward VII it was taken as a massive snub. The best known incident came in the marathon when Italy’s Dorando Pietri was disqualified for being helped over the finish line. But Queen Alexandra gave him a special gold cup. This book celebrates the first London Olympics, examines all the disputes and reveals what happened to the stars of the Games in later life. Informative and entertaining, Keith Baker’s well researched book is aimed at everyone interested in sport and social history. |

The Olympics $4.99 Ask most Olympians how their story begins and they will answer, "When I was young, I always dreamed of going to the Olympics. . ." Some will then go on to tell of their great athletic triumphs. Others will recall agonizing near-misses. But for most, the very fact that they reached the Games at all was a dream come true. For the Olympic Games offer athletes something few others sporting events can: the chance to be recognized as the best in the world at a chosen sport. With stories of great triumphs and great tragedies, the Olympics not only embodies the competitive human spirit, but also sets a stage stage for foreign relations and politics. Historical references combined with amazing sports stories give this book both an educational and exciting appeal. |
