Some English language learners may not be up to standards of the targeted reading goals, which is why teachers should consider using oral diagnostic assessments to evaluate the performance of those ELLs who are at-risk or struggling in some categories of reading and decoding, but are progressing in others. This information also provides teachers with invaluable information on instructional support and early intervention strategies especially for those ELLs in question.
Oral Diagnostic Assessments Provide Early Intervention Strategies
Initially, diagnostic tests should be designed and implemented according to their own set of criteria and standards for a particular class. When implemented at the onset of instruction, diagnostic tests, along with classroom observation and student classroom performance, can help identify and target difficult areas for ESL and ELLs and thus, help drive initial instruction.
Teachers can use the knowledge demonstrated through student performance to determine the type of interventive strategies needed. One such measure might include various reading strategies for instruction in small groups.
Use Oral Assessment to Identify Learning Disabilities
Teachers can use oral diagnostic assessments to assess those struggling English language learners who experience serious reading problems and other difficulties such as dyslexia. If the student in question has not yet been assessed by a professional, then this should be done if the teacher does find any indications of learning disabilities such as dyslexia during initial classroom assessments.
Use Oral Diagnostic Assessment to Evaluate Phonological Awareness
Teacher can complete specific diagnostic assessments that focus on recognizing the sounds of whole words as well as individual initial and last sound-letter correspondence in the area of phonological awareness. One example of oral diagnostic assessment tool is flashcards. When first introducing flashcards in the classroom, the teacher needs to explain their purpose. Students should understand that using flashcards provides a structured and one on one opportunity to review sounds and words.
Flashcards can be used once or twice a week for part of a lesson; usually twenty to thirty minutes in a one on one or very small group format suffices. Teachers can easily keep track of the students' progress by checking off which sound blends or words students in a support group are still experiencing difficulties with.
Oral Diagnostic Activities
Teachers can begin by showing flashcards of all of the consonants, separate cards for capital and small letters, two shapes of g (g), diphthongs and blends such as /sh/ /ch/ /th/ /br/ and /dr/. Other examples include:
* Teachers show flashcards for each word family introduced separately; (i.e. bat, can, had, tag) four words on one card.
* Teachers show individual letters to the student. Students produce the appropriate sounds.
* Students tick off sounds they know and do not know on the chart.
Note: If students continue to have a problem with five or more consonant sounds, teachers do not test the words.
In a private tutorial or in small groups, teachers show the word family cards to the students. Teachers check off word families students know or do not know.
Note: If a student struggles with one or two words, teachers do not test all the rest of the words in that particular word family. Teachers do not have to test sounds that have not yet been taught.
Teachers should also determine the cut-off point for areas of decoding and reading to decide who is at-risk before mapping the results of student performance. ESL teachers can consult either with other ESL teacher or general education teachers in order to decide the cut-off level for at-risk instruction.
When used at the beginning of the school year, oral diagnostic assessments provide teachers with information about their ELLs' reading abilities so teachers can effectively provide early interventive strategies and instructional support.

Letters to Jackie $9.99 It is perhaps the most memorable event of the twentieth century, a moment that left a family and a nation mourning, one that many Americans recall as their first historical memory—the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Within seven weeks of the President's death, Jacqueline Kennedy received more than 800,000 condolence letters. Two years later, the volume of correspondence would exceed 1.5 million letters. For the next forty-six years, the letters would remain essentially untouched. Now historian Ellen Fitzpatrick has selected approximately 250 of these letters for inclusion in Letters to Jackie , a remarkable human record that perfectly preserves the heart-wrenching grief and soul searching of the nation in a time of crisis. Capturing the extraordinary eloquence of so-called ordinary Americans across generations, regions, race, political leanings, and religion—in messages written on elegant stationery, scraps of paper, in pencil, type, ink smudged by tears, and in barely legible handwriting—the letters capture what John F. Kennedy meant to the country, and how his death for some divided American history into Before and After. In Letters to Jackie , Fitzpatrick allows Americans to write their own history of these tumultuous times. "The coffin was very small," as one sixteen-year-old girl observed, "to contain so much of so many Americans." In reflecting on their sense of loss, their fears, and their striving, the authors of these letters wrote an American elegy as poignant and as compelling as their shattered and cherished dreams. |

Letters to Ebay $9.99 By day, Paul Meadors is a fifth grade teacher in a small California town. By night, he trolls the millions of items for sale on eBay, posing as his alter ego Art Farkas, and catching sellers off guard with his ludicrous and bizarre questions about their auctions. As he amusingly demonstrates time and time again, even in today's hyper-vigilant and impersonal digital world, the spirit of human salesmanship lives on, no matter how outrageous the question or request. For example, Art asks the seller of a set of bongo drums if there would be a way to attach them to his grandmother's back so that she could take them to the corner and play on the street to earn her rent money--which elicits a sincere, yet bitingly humorous response. From the entertaining auctions themselves, to Paul's loony letters and the serious responses they provoke, LETTERS TO eBAY provides a fascinating and humourous glimpse into the strange world of eBay and those who dwell within. |

Ghost Letters $16.19 When two modern-day kids discover a grotesque secret in an abandoned mailbox, they have no idea they are about to be drawn into a mystery that began on the other side of the world. Through the help of an English genie and a phantom postman, the two children begin to communicate with a young calligrapher's apprentice who lived 125 years ago in a small, Himalayan village. Writing back and forth, across continents and centuries, the three children eventually realize the possibility of changing history by delivering three letters that were never received. The first is a love letter that could have drawn a broken-hearted Yankee trader back from his lonely exile in the east. The second is a ransom note, and the third, a cryptic missive in a bottle. If the three can make sure these lost letters reach those for whom they were intended, love may be restored, the life of a kidnapped child could be saved, and a secret agent might be able to prevent a pointless war. |

The Paris Letters of Thomas Eakins $27.9 The most revealing and interesting writings of American artist Thomas Eakins are the letters he sent to family and friends while he was a student in Paris between 1866 and 1870. This book presents all these letters in their entirety for the first time; in fact, this is the first edition of Eakins's correspondence from the period. Edited and annotated by Eakins authority William Innes Homer, this book provides a treasure trove of new information, revealing previously hidden facets of Eakins's personality, providing a much richer picture of his artistic development, and casting fresh light on his debated psychosexual makeup. The book is illustrated with the small, gemlike drawings Eakins included in his correspondence, as well as photographs and paintings. In these letters, Eakins speaks openly and frankly about human relationships, male companionship, marriage, and women. In vivid, charming, and sometimes comic detail, he describes his impressions of Paris--from the training he received in the studio of Jean-Leon Gerome to the museums, concerts, and popular entertainments that captured his imagination. And he discusses with great insight contemporary aesthetic and scientific theories, as well as such unexpected subjects as language structure, musical composition, and ice-skating technique. Also published here for the first time are the letters and notebook Eakins wrote in Spain following his Paris sojourn. This long-overdue volume provides an indispensable portrait of a great American artist as a young man. |

Letters to Anna $16.87 This is an engaging account of how a young couple from the hills of middle Tennessee endured the darkest years in our nation's history. Their own words tell how they not only survived, but kept their love for each other and their faith in God alive through the most desperate of circumstances. These were not the wealthy plantation owners of the Southern stereotype, but the son of a cabinetmaker and the daughter of a blacksmith, the kind of hardworking small farmers that actually populated most of the antebellum South. Burton Warfield and his brother-in-law Alonzo (Lonny) Worley both made it home to Isom, TN after the war and a few years later bought a farm together. Burton later decided to move his family west to Arkansas, but the farm has remained in the Worley family, and we still produce grain and cattle there. When I stand on the little rise above Dry Fork Creek where their house once stood, I am reminded of a war-weary veteran who came here to rebuild his life, his family and his community after that great tragedy we know as the Civil War. Stephen G. Worley, Great-grandson of Samuel Alonzo (Lonny) Worley |

Letters from Prague, 1939-1941 $18.05 Their discovery of a box of letters to America sent from relatives in Prague led two sisters to compile this extraordinary collection. Raya Schapiro and Helga Weinberg found the letters among their mother's effects after her death in 1990. They were written by their grandmother and uncle, trapped in Prague after the Nazi occupation, to the girls' parents who had escaped to the United States in May, 1939, leaving the two girls behind. The 77 letters reprinted here span a period of two years, during which the Nazis drew an ever-tightening noose of destruction around the Jews of Prague: each letter is followed by notes of explanation and amplification, as well as notes on laws and official restrictions and the progress of the war. The early letters deal with the difficulties of getting the two small girls out to join parents in America. After that is accomplished, the grandmother and uncle concentrate on their own prospects for immigration, and they struggle to maintain a normal life while hope slips steadily away. Each letter has a censor's stamp on it; each envelope bears the still-frightening emblem of the Third Reich. The letters dramatically convey the tension, growing daily, of existence under the Nazis, and their tone becomes increasingly desperate as every avenue of escape reaches a dead end. Reading Letters from Prague is a moving experience, because it makes tangible a time in history so cruel as to be almost surreal. A rich legacy of bygone European Jewish life is maintained in this book, and Schapiro and Weinberg, now grandparents themselves, can point to an invaluable record of human suffering and show the world that their voices, and those of their ancestors, cannot besilenced. Their singular story will live on for generations to come. |

101 Letters to You $11.99 "One of a kind Gifts from God - Unprecedented style, Letters of encouragement. Unlike anything you?ve read. You?ll see the author Patsy Cellier's heart as she looks into the face of God. Read a sample letter from 101 Letters to You: As I was preparing for a walk one morning, I looked outside and noticed that there was a very strong wind?but the little hummingbirds were still chasing each other away from the bird feeders on the porch. I wondered how such a small bird could continue to fly in such a wind. Then I remembered that the birds would be migrating by the end of September, and their little wings would have to be very strong by then. Their ?adversary, ? the wind, was actually helping to make them strong In our lives as well, God uses our tribulations to make us strong: strong in withstanding future stresses, strong in trusting and relying on Him, strong in understanding and being able to minister to others with similar needs." |

Nietzsche Unpublished Letters $13.83 Discover the compelling private world of the most infamous philosopher of the nineteenth century in Nietzsche 's Unpublished Letters. With correspondence to Nietzsche 's inner circle including several titillating letters to his sister Nietzsche 's Unpublished Letters gives readers a never-before-seen look into the philosopher 's daily life. // Friedrich Nietzsche was a German philosopher and a founder of the Existentialist school of thought. He is famous for his controversial philosophies challenging Christianity, religion, and morality. Nietzsche was born in a small Prussian village in 1844 to a large Lutheran family, and his early childhood was largely marked by the deaths of his father and brother. Nietzsche attended the University of Bonn to study philology, where he discovered the philosophies of Arthur Schopenhauer and Immanuel Kant. He also formed a close friendship with Wilhelm Wagner, and with the help of Wagner, Nietzsche secured a position teaching philology at the University of Basel when he was only 24. This friendship abruptly ended in 1878 with Nietzsche 's book Human, All-too-Human. Shortly after, his health began deteriorating, and he struck up a nomadic, stateless existence during which he wrote his most enduring works, including The Gay Science and Thus Spoke Zarathustra. In 1889, Nietzsche suffered a mental breakdown, and his sister Elisabeth cared for him until his death in 1900. |

LETTERS 13 63 23 The writer of these letters is now to spend three cold winter months at Brumana, a Syrian village on a slope of the Lebanon high above Beirut. There they dismiss their guide and take a car for Jericho and Jerusalem. 5. POSTSCRIPTS FROM ASOLO AND BRUMANA. Keeping School: Letters to Families from Principals of Two Small Schools $18.99 Education reformers Deborah Meier, Nancy Faust Sizer, and Theodore R. Sizer have published books that have literally helped shape a movement centered on small schools, community, and alternative visions of teaching and learning. But as school principals, all three have also done another kind of writing, as well: short weekly essays in their schools' newsletters to families. Sharp and accessible but intellectually ambitious, these little essays talk about everything from homework to discipline, from academic expectations to reading for pleasure. Reflecting decades of practical wisdom, this collection of the best of their letters is an essential companion to books like Ted Sizer's Horace's Compromise, Ted and Nancy Sizer's The Students Are Watching, and Deborah Meier's The Power of Their Ideas. |
