Born June 11, 1939 in Milton, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, John Young Stewart - also known as "Jackie" - is a former Formula One race car driver. Considered by most fans and fellow sportsmen to be a true legend of the track, Jackie is the winner of three World Drivers' Championships, 27 races, 15 fastest laps, and 17 Pole Positions. His career spanned a short 8 years - where he only started 99 races - from 1965 to 1973, but Stewart etched out his own mantle in those few years. After racing, his fame grew as an announcer for the sport in the United States.

In his early life Jackie Stewart was involved with cars via his family's business, Dumbuck Garage in Dumbarton. He worked as an apprentice mechanic, and eventually chose to follow in his brother Jimmy's footsteps as a race car driver. In 1953, Jackie's brother drove in the British Grand Prix for Ecurie Ecosse. However, after his brother was injured in a severe car crash, Jackie's parents urged him to take up shooting instead of driving. Stewart quickly displayed a talent for target shooting, finishing a competition a shot's worth away from making it to the 1960 Olympics.

After his shooting career seemed to be on a standstill, Jackie took an offer from a customer of his family business, Barry Filler, to test some cars. Ken Tyrrell, who was running the Formula Junior team at the time, caught wind of Jackie's impressive test-run performance, and contacted Jackie - through his brother Jimmy - for a test. Stewart took over a car for Bruce McLaren, an experienced Formula One driver, and was soon besting his times around the track. Tyrrell promptly offered Stewart a slot on the team.

In 1964, Jackie drove Formula Three for Tyrrell and even impressively won his first race. Tyrrell didn't compete in Formula One at the time, so Jackie joined with Graham Hill at BRM in 1965. Jackie Stewart would claim his first championship point in his first face, and also win his first race in his rookie year. Stewart seemed to be the sport's newest superstar, until a rain drenched track at Spa caused him to crash into a ditch.

Stewart lay in the car in severe pain for over 25 minutes until he was finally escorted by van to a hospital. Due to Jackie's accident, he and the leader of the BRM team launched a campaign in hopes of improving safety standards for the sport. With more emphasis on safety, Jackie's fortitude and readiness for the high-speed sport was often questioned. With a smooth and fluent style, Stewart continued to win races and silence his critics.

Tyrrell made the jump up to F1 and Stewart joined his team in 1969. Stewart won the Championship with Tyrrell in 1969 and 1971 and 1973. In 1973, Stewart had already made the decision to retire at year's end. However, he still secured a third Championship, but witnessed the death of his friend, François Cevert. Stewart retired as planned but returned to the sport 20 years later as an owner.

Handbook of Fillers, 3e

Handbook of Fillers, 3e

$248.98

This handbook gives direct comparison of general purpose fillers (micron-size fillers) and nanofillers. Over 3,000 research papers, mostly published from 1994 to 2009 (over 1500 new papers in this edition), technical data from over 160 filler and equipment manufacturing companies, and patent literature were reviewed for this comprehensive handbook. The book is designed to be single source of information for an experienced practitioner as well as a reference text for students and those new to the fields where fillers are used. The previous edition, used by very large number of readers, does not contain essential developments of extensive research on fillers in the last 10 years, especially related to nanofillers. Fillers, in most applications, are no longer used as cost-saving additives but they add value to final products, and many products cannot be successfully designed without them. This reference book is a powerful tool for today's challenges, which can only be met by those equipped with extensive information. The book provides the information on three groups of relevant topics: available fillers and their properties, their effect on filled materials, and their use in practical applications. One third of the book covers the grades of fillers available in the world market. Fillers are divided into 83 groups and their properties are analyzed to pinpoint properties, applications, and sources. The technical information is a synthesis of information on several thousand grades of fillers manufactured today. The morphology of fillers, in addition to the numerical and other data, is illustrated by 154 SEM TEM, AFM micrographs. The second part of the handbook discusses the effects of filler incorporation. Ten chapters cover the mechanical properties of compounded materials, the effect of the filler on material rheology, the morphology of the filled system, the material durability, flammability and recycling, the structure of interphase, chemical interactions, interaction with and effect on other additives, fillers use in material combinations, and the analytical methods of testing fillers and filled materials. The last part of the book is concerned with application of fillers on an industrial scale. Several chapters discuss filler transportation, storage, processing and equipment used for these purposes. Others deal with the quality control of fillers, formulation with fillers, different processing methods, groups of products, and health and safety issues. This book is designed to assist industrial engineers to evaluate advances in the processing technology. It is also invaluable for chemists who design formulations for industrial processes and students in chemical engineering who must learn how modern industry operates in practical applications. The handbook is invaluable for sales and marketing because it gives possibility of direct comparison of fillers and their potential use and contains all required information to position them in the marketplac

Fillers, Pauses and Placeholders

Fillers, Pauses and Placeholders

$149

Fillers are items that speakers insert in spontaneous speech as a repair strategy. Types of fillers include hesitation markers and placeholders. Both are used to fill pauses that arise during planning problems or in lexical retrieval failure. However, while hesitation markers may not bear any resemblance to lexical items they replace, placeholders typically share some morphosyntactic properties with the target form. Additionally, fillers can function as a pragmatic tool, in order to replace lexical items that the speaker wants to avoid mentioning for some reason. The present volume is the first collection on the topic of fillers and will be a useful reference work for future investigations on the topic. It consists of typological surveys and in-depth studies exploring the form and use of fillers across languages and sections of different populations, including cognitively impaired speakers. The volume will be interesting to typologists and linguists working in discourse studies.

Particulate Fillers for Polymers

Particulate Fillers for Polymers

$144

This is an overview of particulate filler production and use. Fillers are used in polymers for a variety of reasons: cost reduction, improved processing, density control, optical effects, thermal conductivity, control of thermal expansion, electrical properties, magnetic properties, flame retardancy and improved mechanical properties, such as hardness and tear resistance. For example, in cable applications, fillers such as metakaolinite are used to provide better electrical stability while others, such as alumina trihydrate, are used as fire retardants. Each filler type has different properties and these in turn are influenced by the particle size, shape and surface chemistry. Filler characteristics are discussed from costs to particle morphology. Particle specific surface area and packing are important aspects. Filler loading is also critical and this is discussed. The terminology used in this field is explained and, where appropriate, illustrated. Practical aspects of filler grading are described. For example, the use of an average particle size on data sheets can be misleading as it may not accurately reflect particle size distribution. Different measuring conditions can also give rise to variations in apparent particle size. The principal filler types are outlined. These include carbon black, natural mineral fillers and synthetic mineral fillers. The use of clay in nanocomposites is outlined. Carbon blacks are very important fillers, especially in the rubber industry. A brief description of their preparation and properties is included. Filler surface modification is an important topic. Most particulate fillers are inorganic and polar, which can give rise to poor compatibility with hydrocarbon polymers and processing problems, among other effects. The main types of modifying agent and their uses are described, from fatty acids to functionalised polymers. Fillers are also discussed in relation to different polymer types. For example, in flexible PVC, because of the plasticiser, the filler has little effect on processing. This allows relatively high filler levels to be incorporated. This review is very clearly written by an outstanding expert in this field. Illustrations are included to explain concepts from microscopic filler structure to the effects of fillers on polymer properties. The review is accompanied by around 400 abstracts compiled from the Polymer Library, to facilitate further reading on this subject. Key features…; Filler structure; Filler types; Filler uses; Filler effects on polymer properties; Clearly written; Useful illustrations.
