Tips on How to Handle Your Coins

The funny thing about coins is that the list of do not in regard to their care is far longer than the list of to dos. For some people, like myself, I would rather not keep a coin collection. It just seems like there are so many rules to adhere to!

The main thing you should not do is clean them. Cleaning them will reduce their value considerably as well as damage them. If they don’t dry properly, you could get a layer of algae on them, and you end up with a green layer on your coin.

Another important thing is to find a suitable for your collection. If they come in packaging from the mint, leave it intact. This is as good as it gets in coin storage. You can also get albums or proper holders to store and display in. You should avoid getting anything that has been manufactured with PVC. When stored in PVC holders, they might get the greenish tinge. If your coins come slabbed, you should also leave them as is. This is a great way to store them. Some people do the unthinkable and break the slabbing or the mint packaging. What many people don’t know is that this original packaging adds to the value of the coins.

When handling your coins, if they aren’t packaged in a permanent way, don’t just toss them on any surface. Treat them with as much gentleness as possible. For example, before you put them on the table lay out a soft cloth for them and lay them out. Shoving and pushing them around will not do them any good. When you put in so much effort in acquiring your collection, you should put as much effort into caring for the coins.
