Bangalore is a major metro and is the capital of Karnataka state in India. Kodaikanal is a hill-station located in neighboring Tamil Nadu.

Bangalore can be reached directly by rail from different parts of India holidays. It also has an international airport so you can fly throuth flights to india into Bangalore from many cities across the globe.

You can drive down to the hill-station of Kodaikanal from Bangalore as there are many private travel agencies that offer transportation to Kodaikanal. You can also reach Kodaikanal from Chennai.

2. How to travel within Kodaikanal and Bangalore

Bangalore for the backpacking tourist has many options to offer. The inter-city buses can transport you to any part of Bangalore. There are three wheeler cabs called auto rickshaws or simply autos that play at nearly half the rate as compared to normal cabs.

Walking in and around Bangalore is also a pleasant experience given the temperate climate all through the year.

In Kodaikanal too, the best way to savor the natural beauty is to walk around or pedal around.

3. What to see in Kodaikanal and Bangalore

Bangalore is chock-a-block with many places of tourist interest. Start by a visit to the Vidhana Soudha – the legislative assembly. The structure is modern, but is built like a palace with cream colored sandstone. It is an impressive structure.

The Lalbaugh Botanical garden at the center of the city that functions as the city's green lung is well worth an evening visit. Also not to be missed are the huge ISKCON temple complex and Tipu's palace. If you do not mind walking reasonably long distances then you can walk around Bangalore to reach these spots.

While in Kodaikanal do take time to visit the Pillar rocks. Walking is the best option all around Kodaikanal so that you can literally drink the beauty of the place, rather than zip around in motorized transportation, unless you are hard-pressed for time.

If walking is too cumbersome and time consuming for you then you can get cycles on hire and pedal your way across Kodaikanal. The Kodaikanal lake, the botanical gardens and the Bear Shola and Silver Cascade falls are not to be missed. A backpacker's paradise is the Coaker's walk a pathway carved in to the hillside with stunning views.

4. The Best Season to visit Kodaikanal and Bangalore

Bangalore has a temperate climate that can get moderately chilly during winters, so you can visit it all round the year. Kodaikanal being a hill-station, is pleasant during summers and can get quite cold during winters. So if you do not enjoy the really cold weather then avoid visiting Kodaikanal in December-January in India tours

5. Where to stay in Kodaikanal and Bangalore

Both Bangalore and Kodaikanal have many budget hotels and medium priced hostels and lodgings. There are Dharmasalas (religious dormitories) and YMCA, Youth Hostels both in Bangalore and Kodaikanal that can give you accommodation at nominal charges. Remember that the Dharmasalas strictly prohibit non-vegetarian food.

6. What to eat in Kodaikanal, and Bangalore

You must sample the rice based cuisine of south India at both Bangalore and Kodaikanal. The fluffy idlis, crisp dosas and vadas to be had with tangy sambhar and sharp pungent chutney is something not to be missed. You can also get Western continental, Italian, Chinese and North India food at the various shacks and eateries both at Bangalore and Kodaikanal.
