So I am pretty sure that most of us have heard about the 4 Cs when it comes to choosing diamonds. For the few that have not and for those who need little reminder, they are:

Colour - Grades from D to Z. Highly desirable D representing colourless stones and progressing with increasingly more yellow through to Z.

Clarity - This refers to the absence of internal inclusions or external blemishes. Signified with 'F' for Flawless through to 'I' for Imperfect.

Cut - This has predominantly become to do with the shape of the diamond for example; Brilliant Cut (round) and Princess Cut (square).

Carat - Which is all about the weight of the stone measured in carats and points. A one carat stone weighs approx 0.2 grams and just like £1 sterling can divided into 100 pence so can the carat be divided into 100 points.

Now there is another 'C' which is just as important as the ones mentioned but is conveniently overlooked in many jewellery retail circles. And that is 'Cut'. For those of you who have just thrown your socks at your computer screen, thinking that I have senile dementia (at 36!) allow me to explain.

Cut, is a C with two aspects; one is the shape as already mentioned and the other refers to proportion, symmetry and polish. You may think that these rather detailed aspects do not matter but let me explain how they do:

The proportion of a diamond specifically refers to the relationships of the depths and angles of certain sections of the stone. There are optimum 'designs' of diamond cuts meticulously calculated so as the stone throws as much light back out to the viewer - harnessing if you like the incredible and unique optical qualities of diamond. The further away a diamond's proportions are from the optimums, then the less it sparkles! For example, if a diamond is cut very deeply then much of the light that enters through the top section of the stone will pass through the back of the stone as opposed to bouncing back into your face!

There are no prizes for guessing what Symmetry refers to but it is not as simple as it may sound. Symmetry includes the shape of each facet, how the facets line up with eachother, the position of the point (culet) and more. Each of these has an effect on the brilliance of the diamond or more simply how the light is reflected back out.

Polish refers to how smoothly the facets have been polished, how defined the edges of each facets are and if there are any marks visible from the polishing wheel. Imagine looking at a mirror which has some scratches on the surface or the glass is warped in areas. The effect is that your reflection is not complete or unclear. The same applies to the light from the diamond in that the facet surfaces can effect or obstruct the path of the light.

So now you're armed with this information how do you use it? My advice is that when you are purchasing a diamond engagement ring, for example and you are quoted the regular 4 Cs by the vendor - request a little more information. On most certificated stones the proportion, symmetry and polish are mentioned on the cert and graded from Poor (P) through to Excellent (EX).

Understand that anything below a Good (G) may have an affected brilliance but also do not think that you need to have an Excellent. Ask your jeweller to explain the details. On stones that do not have a certificate ask your vendor to explain his opinion on the 'extra details' and to show you with the loop. Any jeweller worth their salt will be totally candid with you about the diamond you are choosing.
