Every body has a passion, in one form of another. For many, collecting things, like antiques and coins, gives these hobbyists a sense of accomplishment, as well as helps preserve memories for future generations of the family to share. Did you know that the study of coins and various currencies is called numismatics, and the persons who avidly collect these coins for their aesthetic and historical value are called numismatists?
Numismatists are spread all over the world, with even more people getting hooked on the trade, too. The practice of collecting coins even dates back to thousands of years. According to the Journal of the History of Collections in a 1994 article, the practice has flourished during the Renaissance in Europe, where coins were collected or given as gifts and tokens of friendship.
Ancient European silver coins are among the most widely circulated among coin traders and collectors of the world. If you do a search on Google alone, it will yield you thousands of sites that sell and appraise these invaluable pieces of history.
In Ancient Greece, a common form of denomination was called the drachma, which was the ancient currency that has evolved into modern use until the 20th century. Sources explain that these types of ancient European silver coins have been around since 1100 BC, and were widely used during the Alexandrian period. Some collectors sell silver drachmas for about $60 each, maybe more, depending on the era of the coin.
Ancient Roman coins were known singularly as the denarius, plural form is denarii. These were silver coins dating back as far as 211 BC, and some coins even featured the face of Marcus Aurelius. For some collectors, then can purchase ancient silver coins for about $30 or more each.
The value of ancient European silver coins depend not only on their age, but also their condition, which can be classified as fine, very fine, and others. Most of the coins during these era featured faces of prominent leaders, and even images of Roman or Greek gods and goddesses. Some coins for sale are processed or cleaned, and this adds to their marketability and value. For example, a Marc Antony coin, with goddess Minerva on reverse side, in very fine condition, and dating 83 to 30 BC retails for about $400 or more. The most expensive Greek silver coins are all stored in the National Numismatic Museum in Athens.
Heather recommends looking online for some cool silver coins like silver dollars.

The Legacy of Ancient Rome in the Russian Silver Age $61.6 For poets throughout the world Rome was the world. This is particularly true for Russian poets, owing to the anagrammatical relation of the words Rome and mir (Rome and world). The legacy of ancient Rome has always constituted an important component of the Russian cultural consciousness. The revitalization of classical scholarship in nineteenth-century Russia and new approaches to antiquity prompted many of the Russian Symbolists to seek their inspiration in ancient Rome. Vladimir Solovyov, Dmitry Merezhkovsky, Valery Bryusov, Vyacheslav Ivanov, Maksimilian Voloshin, Vasily Komarovsky, and Mikhail Kuzmin all made significant contributions to what is often referred to as the “Roman text.” The Legacy of Ancient Rome in the Russian Silver Age analyzes the forms involved in creating the Roman image and explores its functionality within the given poetic system. In addition to the formal analysis, the background and the stimulus leading up to the composition of a particular poem are explored, as well as allusions to legends, myths and Rome’s geography and architecture. Moreover, this study considers the function of the Roman text in Russian Symbolist poetics and the works of the individual poets. Finally, the relation between the Roman and Petersburg texts of Russian literature is explored, since many of the Russian Symbolist poets found in Rome a perfect metaphor for their studies of the city and “urban” poetry. |
