The town of Catania
When You rent an apartment in Catania - Sicily, during Your stay in You'll realize how beautiful and magic this region is.
Catania is an Italian city of 295,566 inhabitants, capital of the province with the same name. Founded in 729 BC by Greeks Calcidesi boasts a millenary history characterized by various dominations whose remains now enrich the cultural and architectural heritage. Throughout its history has been repeatedly destroyed by volcanic eruptions (the most impressive in historical times, is that of 1669) and earthquakes (the most catastrophic mentioned were those of 1169 and 1693). The baroque old town was declared a World Heritage Site in 2002, along with seven towns of the Val di Noto.
Catania is one of the few cities in Italy to offer such diverse landscapes concentrated in a single site. Located on the east coast at the foot of Mount Etna (the highest in Europe) and halfway between the cities of Messina and Syracuse. The city is crossed by an underground river, the Amenano. One of the most popular and characteristic places of Catania is the fish market "della Paescheria" with its glowing colors, voices and smells. The University of
Catania, founded in 1434, is the oldest in Sicily. It is one of the largest in South Italy, with 62,000 members divided into twelve faculties.
The city and the plain of Catania have Mediterranean climate. Precipitation, rather scarce, are between 450 to 550 mm annually, with very marked summer minimum and moderate peak in autumn.

Sicily $24.7 GUY DE MAUPASSANT, the master of the nineteenthcentury French short story, visited Sicily in the spring of 1885 and wrote his travel memoir as a tribute to the art, architecture, people and landscape of this Mediterranean island. He provides a vivid account of this strange and divine museum of architecture, where Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, and Norman influences combine to produce monuments of beauty and a unique Sicilian style. In a land then little touched by modern transportation, with and without guides, he traveled by train, boat, horse and foot to reach the places he had set out to see: Palermo and the great cathedral of Monreale; the ancient Greek sites of Segesta, Selinunte and Agrigento; Messina and the Aeolian Islands; Catania, Taormina, Syracuse. Maupassant climbs to the top of Vulcano, Mount Etna, and the fortified monastery on Monte Cuccio, and down into the Capuchin catacombs in Palermo and the sulphur mines of Casteltermini. He visits many places that had special aesthetic and poetic importance for him, like the Archaeological Museum of Syracuse and its famous statue of Venus and in Palermo both the Palatine Chapel and Wagners room in the Hotel des Palmes where the composer wrote the final notes of his last opera, Parsifal. Sicily is edited and translated by Robert W. Berger, an art historian who has published extensively on French art and architecture and on the history of Paris. Introduction, notes, bibliography, map. 25 engravings and photographs. Historical Travel, Paperback. Author: Maupassant, Guy de/ Berger, Robert W.
