A simple shed trap for collecting deer sheds can be built using a few bungee cords and a little ingenuity. The best time to place shed traps is in mid to late February prior to when bucks start losing their antlers.
Look for areas where deer frequent this time of year, preferably between bedding and feeding areas. Look for a blowdown or pile of large limbs to begin building your trap. Stretch the bungee cords from limb to limb, so as to make the buck enter his head between the cords to get to the bait. I like to use shelled corn for bait. Other types of prepared baits with wheat or oats and malassas also work well.
The buck's antlers will get entangled in the bungee cords causing the antlers to fall off. However, the cords don't provide enough resistance to cause damage to the deer or frighten him away. Position the cords about two feet above the ground and over the bait. Try it...it's worked for me.
Another simple idea for locating antler sheds is to concentrate your search in areas where deer winter. Look for these areas when snow's on the ground and when tracks can be easily seen. Another good tip is to position game cameras in your hunting area and check them often to see when antlers start to drop. This way you'll know when to place your shed traps and begin searching for sheds.
