For many centuries the island was ruled by the colonies and similar to how it reflects in the rich cultural heritage, the Jamaican currency also has a colorful past.
The British wanted to introduce a single currency structure in the early 19th century that would be used by all the colonies. These were called the anchor money and were minted in silver coins with the reverse reflecting an anchor design.
These were not well received by the colonial merchants as they prefer the pieces of eight which were more familiar to them. These anchor money quickly grew useless and was only used when handling transactions with the military.
The British made another effort in 1825 by issuing some copper and sliver coins. This too was rejected by the slaves who was newly freed and would utilize it at the Saturday markets. The theory for this rejection was that as converted Christians the copper should not be used for coin making and they should stick with the customary gold or silver ones.
In 1834, there was a shortage of the silver coins in the lower denominations, so the British got a chance to import penny ha'penny and three pence pieces in silver. There was now a new reasoning behind the importation of these coins and the penny ha'penny grew very popular with these Christians.
They started calling the coins "quattie", "quarter real" and "quartile", which then got the common name as the "Christians quatties".
The British currency became the Jamaican money by law on the 31st of December 1840. The money that would now circulate extensively throughout the island was the copper coins, half penny, farthing, penny and penny ha'penny in the lower denominations.
There were also the three pence, silver coins, six pence, florin half crown, shilling and crown in the higher denominations. The coins from the Spanish were now out of circulation except for the Spanish doubloon that was in use until 1901.
In the year 1969, the currency in Jamaica switched to that of a decimal system which was now dollars and cents. It did not take long to replace all the previous pence, shillings and pounds with coins and notes in a variety of colors; with some similarity to the previous denominations from the British.
An education campaign was launched to the public and the transition to the new system of Jamaican currency was very smooth. The Minister of finance at the time Edward Seaga had a team of representatives doing research as to what should be depicted on these new currencies.
It was decided that the features would depict the ideals of the now independent nation and the striking characteristics of the island rich flora and fauna. This resulted in many of the currency that was in circulation then and now, having many interesting features representing the rich history of the country.
There are other denominations now which also depict images of National Heroes and past Prime Ministers.
The Jamaica dollars and notes always reflect the beauty and colorful history of this lovely little island. However, there is this ongoing problem with this Jamaican currency as it is always devaluing which create greater problems in the growth of the country's economy.

Ugandan Shilling $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Shilling is the currency of Uganda. Technically, the shilling is subdivided into 100 cents but no subdivisions have been issued since the revaluation of the shilling in 1987. The first Ugandan shilling (UGS) replaced the East African shilling in 1966 at par. Following high inflation, a new shilling (UGX) was introduced in 1987 worth 100 old shillings. The shilling is now a stable currency and predominates in most financial transactions in Uganda, which has a very efficient foreign exchange market with low spreads. The United States dollar is also widely accepted. The pound sterling and increasingly the euro are also used. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Somali Shilling $86.03 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The shilling (English), shilin (Somali, also ) or scellino (Italian) has been the currency of Somalia since 1962. The ISO 4217 code is SOS. It is subdivided into 100 cents (English), senti (Somali, also ) or centesimi (Italian). Rival producers of Somali shillings emerged after 1991. These included the Na shilling, which failed to gain widespread acceptance, and the Balweyn I and II, which were forgeries of pre1991 bank notes. A competition for seigniorage drove the value of the money down to about 0.04 per SoSh (1000) note, approximately the commodity cost. Consumers have refused to accept bills larger than the 1991 denominations, which has helped to stop the devaluation from spiraling further. The pre1991 notes and the subsequent forgeries are treated as the same currency. It takes large bundles to make cash purchases. United States dollar is often used for larger transactions. The Age of Deleveraging By Shilling, A. Gary $41.04 Top economist Gary Shilling shows you how to prosper in the slowgrowing and deflationary times that lie ahead. While many investors fear a rapid rise in inflation, author Gary Shilling, an awardwinning economic forecaster, argues that the global economy is going through a long period of deleveraging and weak growth, which makes deflation far more likely and a far greater threat to investors than inflation. Shilling explains in clear language and compelling logic why the U.S. and world economy will struggle for several more years and what investors can do to protect and grow their wealth in the difficult times ahead. The investment strategies that worked for last 25 years will not work in the next 10 years. Shilling advises readers to avoid broad exposure to stocks, real estate, and commodities and to focus on highquality bonds, highdividend stocks, and consumer staple and food stocks. . Written by one of todays best forecasters of economic trendstwice voted by Institutional Investor as WallStreets top economistClearly explains what to invest in, what to avoid, and how to cope with a deflationary, slowgrowth economy Demonstrates how Shilling has been consistently right about major economic trends since he began forecasting in the early 1980sFilled with indepth insights and practical advice, this timely guide lays out a convincing case for why investors need to be prepared for a long period of weak growth and deflationnot inflationand what you can do to prosper in the difficult times ahead Author: Shilling, A. For a Shilling a Day by Rhodes, Peter [Paperback] $41.26 We can get you buggers for a shilling a day, but the horses cost eighty quid each. Kneedeep in mud and slush, covered in boils and lice, this was what his sergeantmajor told one of the interviewees in this extraordinary and moving series of accounts of lives lived in the service of king, queen and country. We all know the history that agreedupon and celebrated official fiction. Here instead are the reports of those who were actually there at the sharp end. Here is the unvarnished reality.
