With the state of the economy, more Americans today are losing their jobs and of course their health benefits. When this happens you really only have 3 options: 1. Stay with your COBRA plan if it is available and pay on average anywhere from $900 - $1,500 per month for a family. 2. Go without health insurance (not advisable) or 3. find an affordable health insurance plan that will coverage the most important health claims.
There are a lot of health insurance companies out there with many different plans, but there are really only 2 types of plans in terms of general categories: PPO's and Catastrophic plans. By understanding how each plan works, you can truly design the best plan to help fit your insurance needs and most important, budget!
Let's discuss PPO's first. PPO's are the newest version of the old "major medical" plans that were the first form of health insurance years ago, but with nationwide networks. With a PPO plan you can have it all and this is the reason why PPO's are more expensive. A typical PPO plan for a family comprises of a deductible ranging from $1,500 - $5,000 on average and ranges from $400 - $700 a month. There are normally 2 deductibles required per year per family. This deductible normally only has to be met for "major medical" occurrences such as hospitalization or surgeries. The 2nd part to this plan is what makes it attractive and that is the "first dollar" benefits. So if you have to simply go and visit a doctor, you pay a co payment of anywhere from $25-$40 per visit. Normally preventative services are included with PPO's. There are no deductibles or co-insurances that have to be met first. Prescription drug plans are normally included or can be added as an option. And in most cases you can add a descent Dental and Vision plan. One of my favorite options to add with this plan is an accident benefit rider that covers the deductible and coinsurance for any major medical event that is caused by an accident. When considering a PPO, you really need to ask yourself if your "usage" of the plan is worth the cost that you will pay to have it.
Catastrophic or "High Deductible" plans are starting to be the most popular way that families and individuals are covering themselves while keeping the monthly premiums at bay. The difference with a catastrophic plan is that there are normally NO first dollar benefits and all coverage by the insurance company is driven by the deductible first. So for example if you choose a catastrophic plan with a $5,000 deductible and it has doctors visits built in to the plan with a $25 copay, then you would not be eligible to start using this benefit until you pay out the first $5,000 for the year. This sounds scary at first and people tend to dwell on a larger deductible with no first dollar coverage and how much out of pocket money they could potentially be exposed to. For this reason here is how I recommend you set up a health insurance plan to maximize the best cost for the coverage:
For a family I recommend going with a $5,000 Catastrophic or HSA plan with 100% coverage thereafter. These plans on average will save you a few hundred dollars per month than going with a PPO plan.
Next, you add a first dollar accident benefit which will cover your deductible as well as a critical illness plan that will cover your deductible and provide you with additional cash benefits in the event of heart attacks, strokes, cancer, major organ transplants etc. You can even add additional life insurance and disability benefits to this package all for LESS that what it would cost you to have a full fledged PPO plan.
So catastrophic plans with supplemental benefits added will truly save you Thousands of dollars a year in insurance premiums and you can even qualify for tax savings at the end of the year.
