Not many people really know how to maintain their iPod battery. There's plenty of rumors circulating on how to, but some of these miss the facts, and if followed will lead you to misusing your battery. This could lead to a shorter life, meaning that you quickly could be without your iPod in your everyday life, thus no more music whilst jogging, on your JVC car stereo or in the office! Here's our top tips on how to prevent this from happening...

Priming the Battery

Before you ever use a battery operated product, such as an iPod, you have to 'prime' your gadget. This means you have to charge it until the battery indicator states that it is full and no longer needs charging. Unlike phones, with iPods there is no need to charge it for 24 hours.

Charging

Lithium based batteries, such as the iPod uses, means your iPod does not suffer from the 'memory effects' that Nickel batteries suffer from, enabling you to charge your battery at any point. With Nickel batteries, if not fully drained before they are recharged they lose their capacity over time to maintain their energy capacity, leaving you with an Mp3 player with a much shorter life span and hours play back. However, if your iPod battery is fully discharged you must recharge your battery as soon as possible, as your iPod uses small amounts of energy to maintain itself when off.

With an iPod battery, you can charge your iPod at anytime that is convenient to you, rather than waiting for the battery to empty, enabling you to charge it on your laptop, on your JVC car stereo and at home for short periods of time. Charging overnight is no problem either as the iPod stops consuming energy when it is finished charging.

What To avoid When Charging

Apple recommends that you never charge when a cover or slip is on your iPod, nor should you leave your iPod in temperatures below room temperature. So don't leave in your car attached to your JVC in cold winter months or on very hot days (especially in direct sunlight). Both could cause damage to your iPod.

When Your iPod Is Left For A Long Period Of Time

Leaving your iPod for a long period of time can cause damage. After being left a month or less, your iPod will have completely discharged. Although it can still be charged, you may notice a significant change in battery life, as for the battery to maintain its high performance, it needs to be charged regularly (even if not used regularly). It is recommended that you charge your iPod at least once a month to maintain the maximum performance.
