The main advantage of a clearly defined goal is to help people and businesses to concentrate. The SMART approach works well in many cases. If you set a goal to read a chapter of the new book you just bought. You open the book and just read. Pretty simple. It is well run in manufacturing when things are predictable. car manufacturer can set a goal to manufacture the exact number of cars. Because they know exactly how long it takes to manufacture a car and how many cars they can produce a day.
But in most cases, the application is not that smooth. There are some problems when you put the SMART approach to practice:
Realistic and achievable
You may remember in the last post, I explained the principles of the SMART approach. Set a realistic and achievable goal in theory is easy, but in practice could be difficult.
While setting a goal to break the world record is not really an achievable goal and realistic, many people do break the world record. If you tell the young athlete to set a goal to break the record in a decade, they most likely trouble comfortable with the idea. First, it is really conditional on other individuals, they have no control if other people are born to be stronger or form. There are simply too many variables beyond their control. How can you ensure that you are the best in the world without checking all the other people? Yet it is their dream to be there. Which professional athlete do not want to be on top of the world? Athletes do not want to set a realistic goal to be in 2nd or 3rd place. It kills the game.
People want to keep hope their dreams, while not trying to be disappointed. It's in our nature we do not want to commit to him, engage in any something that has too many variables is not a good idea. Because we know too well the chances yet we dream, think and try to feel hopeful about it.
The same dilemma occurs during the financial crisis this year. For many businesses and industries, they have difficulty a target in the current economic climate. Nobody knows what will happen half a year later. For example, in the construction sector, companies could die because of the low demand for real estate or real could suddenly boom thanks to some major government projects to stimulate the economy. You do not know what's coming. Because you have not control what others will do.
It is difficult for managers to set the target. Set a bar too high, such as revenue increased 20% during the recession, get discouraged workers, people think you're crazy. Define bar too low, you will not inspire the real performances of the people.
Managers do not want good things to happen like getting new contracts important. Like athletes think the gold medal. Yet it would be preferable not to write in your book hotel objectives. Too many factors and economic uncertainty can not guarantee you get this specific result. So use the lens as a court stick to evaluate your success this is not ideal. In many cases, you will be judged on what happened to you rather what you did.

The Summer We Read Gatsby $3.99 Half-sisters Cassie and Peck could not be more different. Cassie is a newly divorced journalist with her feet firmly planted on the ground; Peck is a vintage-obsessed actress with her head in the clouds. In fact, the only thing they seem to have in common is their inheritance of Fool's House, a rundown cottage left to them by their beloved Aunt Lydia. But Cassie and Peck can't afford the house, and they can't agree on anything, much less what to do with the place. Plus, along with the house, they've inherited an artist-in-residence and self-proclaimed genius named Biggsy who seems to bring suspiciously bad luck wherever he goes. As these two likable sisters try to understand their aunt's puzzling instructions to "seek a thing of utmost value" from within the house, they're both distracted by romantic entanglements with men from their pasts. The Summer We Read Gatsby, set in the end-of-an-era summer of 2008, is filled with fabulous parties, eccentric characters, and insider society details that showcase Ganek's pitch-perfect sense of style and wit. |

How to Read the Bible $14.99 Scholars from different fields have joined forces to reexamine every aspect of the Hebrew Bible. Their research, carried out in universities and seminaries in Europe and America, has revolutionized our understanding of almost every chapter and verse. But have they killed the Bible in the process? In How to Read the Bible, Harvard professor James Kugel leads the reader chapter by chapter through the "quiet revolution" of recent biblical scholarship, showing time and again how radically the interpretations of today's researchers differ from what people have always thought. The story of Adam and Eve, it turns out, was not originally about the "Fall of Man," but about the move from a primitive, hunter-gatherer society to a settled, agricultural one. As for the stories of Cain and Abel, Abraham and Sarah, and Jacob and Esau, these narratives were not, at their origin, about individual people at all but, rather, explanations of some feature of Israelite society as it existed centuries after these figures were said to have lived. Dinah was never raped -- her story was created by an editor to solve a certain problem in Genesis. In the earliest version of the Exodus story, Moses probably did not divide the Red Sea in half; instead, the Egyptians perished in a storm at sea. Whatever the original Ten Commandments might have been, scholars are quite sure they were different from the ones we have today. What's more, the people long supposed to have written various books of the Bible were not, in the current consensus, their real authors: David did not write the Psalms, Solomon did not write Proverbs or Ecclesiastes; indeed, there is scarcely a book in the Bible that is not the product of different, anonymous authors and editors working in different periods. Such findings pose a serious problem for adherents of traditional, Bible-based faiths. Hiding from the discoveries of modern scholars seems dishonest, but accepting them means undermining much of the Bible's reliability and authority as the word of God. What to do? In his search for a solution, Kugel leads the reader back to a group of ancient biblical interpreters who flourished at the end of the biblical period. Far from naïve, these interpreters consciously set out to depart from the original meaning of the Bible's various stories, laws, and prophecies -- and they, Kugel argues, hold the key to solving the dilemma of reading the Bible today. How to Read the Bible is, quite simply, the best, most original book about the Bible in decades. It offers an unflinching, insider's look at the work of today's scholars, together with a sustained consideration of what the Bible was for most of its history -- before the rise of modern scholarship. Readable, clear, often funny but deeply serious in its purpose, this is a book for Christians and Jews, believers and secularists alike. It offers nothing less than a whole new way of thinking about sacred Scripture. |
