Sweden's 'work ethic' dilemma Life is challenging is a well-developed society. Sweden, as one of the most well developed nations on the globe, has its key success factors and one could say that healthy living, democratic processes, equality, a strong welfare state, a very effective education system are but a few of these.
The nation is consistently rated as a strong international performer in gross national product growth, quality of goods and services as well as females and males having the best or near, longevity. Sweden is a country that can boast the greatest number of global brands for a nation its size of population on earth.
Take for example such brands as Ikea, Ericsson, Metro, SKF, Volvo, Astra Zeneca, Swedish Match, Tetra Pak, Electrolux, Atlas Copco, Seco Tools to name a few. A country of 9 million people, which is acknowledged by many measurement indices as an outstanding performer. Indices such as the composed competitiveness index show Sweden second only to the US as having the best conditions for competitiveness. Some of the components show Sweden in fact number one in the world as a Knowledge economy.
The nation is second only to Finland as a leading innovator and according to the Global Summary Innovation index. Furthermore, Sweden is ranked as fourth in the world as the most transparent country for business. Well then, with such a positive set of indicators and such a healthy nation in terms of longevity, why are Swedes the most absent from work in the western world. Some of the figures are alarming and one could say, thank god for the welfare state, because without it we could wonder just how many Swedes could survive and be so affluent.
On any given working day around 28% of the eligible workforce is absent from work for one reason or another. One alarming figure is that the percentage of employees absent from work on so called 'long term illnesses' (6 months or more) in the public sector can be as high as 10-12% in some local government employers. So, imagine a workforce of say 10.000 in a municipal council and then imagine that 28% of them are off from work at any given time- simple maths tell you that is 2.800 of which maybe 1.200 are 'long term sick'.
We could say that Swedes find it easy and convenient to be away from work not only are benefits high but lifestyle factors suggest that more and more people want more and more time off, particularly in the warmer non winter months. What does this tell us about our ability to manage and lead if we have such a high percentage of employees absent from work? I sincerely believe this indicates that we do not manage successfully and that it gives a damning picture of our failure to control absenteeism and all this, this in one of the world's most successful economies. If only we could get absenteeism down to a really effective and manageable level, Sweden is likely to lift its indicators even further.
