Set Choice

This is the first time I've touched a set of Collectors Choice sports cards in over a decade. 2008-09 Upper Deck Collector's Choice Hockey is a huge step up from the last Collectors Set I laid hands on (1996 Collectors Choice Baseball), but it doesn't square up so well against other modern hockey card releases. All around the design is neither an asset nor a liability.

At around $25 a box, its hard to say Collector's Choice is a bad value. But even at that price, its not a great value either. Unless, and this is a big unless, you are buying hockey cards for a younger (child) collector. This is where it shines. I would whole heatedly recommend 2008-09 Upper Deck Collector's Choice Hockey as a great buy for parents who are in search of a stocking stuffer or birthday present for their children. 2008-09 Upper Deck Collector's Choice Hockey gives kids a substantial amount of cards to lay into and digest in a way that no other product on the market offers at this price.

2008-09 Upper Deck Collector's Choice Hockey has all the prime time rookies and NHL All-Stars. However, these players are limited to base cards, as well as a thin assortment of unnumbered parallels. The almost complete lack of an autograph and game used memorabilia card checklist, while understandable at this low a price point, is still a painful omission.

I'm firmly convinced that kids will enjoy the heck out of 2008-09 Upper Deck Collector's Choice Hockey. If I were grading this product on how good it was for kids, I would have graded it in the high 80's. However, the cross section of collectors who frequent The Cardboard Connection extends well beyond just children, so I graded 2008-09 Upper Deck Collector's Choice Hockey accordingly.

When all was said and done though, it wasn't that exciting of a box break. Unless you are just hard up for cash and cannot afford anything, or you are buying a hockey card product for a child, there are some much better options available for spending your collecting dollar.
