It doesn't cost much to gather coin collection supplies to support your new coin collecting hobby, but these supplies will make all the difference in the preservation of your coins.
Proper Handling Materials
It's best to handle your coins as little as possible. Many of the coins you buy will be in sealed cases, and, in most cases, it's best to leave these seals unbroken and the coins untouched. Believe it or not, a broken seal, a fingerprint smudge or a bit of oil from your hands will lower the value of the coin in question. Coins you buy that are not in sealed cases should be kept in proper storage containers or display albums and touched only when being graded or cleaned. You'll want to invest in a pair of gloves, coin tweezers, a magnifying glass and a piece of velvet for handling purposes.
Proper Storage
You can keep your collectables in coin albums, coin envelopes, coin cases or coin boards, depending on if you wish to display your coins or if you wish to keep your collection stored away.
Cleaning Materials
Believe it or not, most collectors do not clean their coins because they do not want to take the risk of devaluing a coin by accidentally scratching or smudging it. Instead, have a professional clean your valuable coins. The professional can determine if the changes occurring to the coin often termed "toning" have made the coin more or less valuable, and he can clean or not clean the coin accordingly.
However, if you feel the need to clean a coin, invest in a bottle of olive oil, some mild soap, a pair of cloth gloves and distilled water. Soak the coin in olive oil for a few days, and then soak the coin in mildly soapy water for a few days. Rinse with distilled water, and then let the coin air dry.
Coin Collecting Resources
You'll want to educate yourself on the whole coin collecting and trading industry. Buy yourself a coin grading book, and start collecting information on coins. Coin collecting software, books and magazines are all available online, in dealer shops and at coin collecting conferences.

The Seal $16 THE NEW NOVEL FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF TEMPLE OF THE GRAIL It is the year 1307 and the ancient Order of the Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon is in danger. The King of France and Pope Clement V are plotting its destruction, scheming to appropriate the Order's most sacred relic: an ancient mystery encrypted on the ring seal of the Grand Master, Jacques de Molay. Jacques entrusts the sacred ring to his seneschal, Etienne de Congost, a battle-weary but incorruptible man whose task is to take the Seal to the farthest edges of Europe for safekeeping. While Jacques and his Templar brothers are tortured and left to die in prisons, the trusted seneschal travels through a world in ruin, overcoming Machiavellian plots and dodging Papal spies, only to find that the greatest test awaits him at his final destination... But will Etienne be strong enough to resist the temptations that guard the true power of the Seal? The answer comes almost 700 years later, by way of a writer who arrives at Lockenhaus Castle in Austria to research a book on the Templars. Together with an eccentric local woman, a mystic, the writer explores the history of the Seal, not realising that, at the same time, they are also untangling a web of destiny. A web that binds them both to the mystery of the Seal. |
