If you decide to use an adhesive such as PL premium to attach tile baseboards to your wall, then you are most definitely going to need an application tool to do so successfully. The correct tool required is know as a caulking gun, simply because it resembles a gun with a barrel and trigger mechanism, and that it is used to apply a variety of adhesive substances known as 'caulking', such as silicone for example.
There are a variety of styles and brands of caulking guns available on the market to choose from, but in my recommendations you should certainly stay away from the cheap dollar store options. These are normally found to be made of inferior quality metals and material, and can buckle up in no time due to the pressure required to squeeze out particular caulking products from their application tubes.
Spend a little extra on a good quality caulking gun, anywhere in the range of around $10 to $12 dollars, as you will probably find that one day soon that you will need to use it again, especially if you are interested in DIY construction orientated projects. You can still find good brands anywhere between the $7 to $20 dollar mark, but don't go overspending on a professional caulking gun at the higher end of the price scale, as these are more suited towards forcing out adhesives and sealants of dense properties required for specialist jobs.
To first use a tube of adhesive or any silicone caullkng product, pull out the cocking gun push rod to its maximum length by pressing the release button with your thumb which is situated at the rear of the trigger mechanism. Insert the application tube into the barrel, making sure that the plunger at the end of the push rod is situated in the hollow recess at the base of the tube. Pump the trigger a few times so that the plunger sits firmly in the recess out of sight, but without using too much pressure, and just enough to grip the tube firmly in place.
Next, cut the sealed end off the plastic cone-shaped application nozzle to allow for the adhesive to flow out. Because it is cone-shaped, the further away from the tip you cut this, the wider the hole will be for the contents to flow out, so start small and work your way up depending on the product and your application. Use a Stanley knife for a clean cut, but always watch your fingers when cutting such items, especially while being held in your hands during the process.
With either a long nail or the poker implement attached to your caulking gun if there is one present in the design, stick this down the plastic nozzle to pierce the fine seal on the tube. This finally releases the product from the tube, allowing it to flow up the plastic cone nozzle when pressure is applied. If it is the attached poker on your gun you used to pierce this, then don't forget to wipe it clean before you begin with your job, as it's always important to look after your tools and remove any unwanted substances from them so that they last longer.
Finally, pump the trigger again, and this time you should feel more pressure when doing so. You should see the adhesive flow up the plastic cone if the plastic is partially visible, but if nothing is coming out after two or three pumps and the pressure becomes stiffer on the trigger, then stop what you are doing, release the plunger pressure, and insert your poker or nail once again.
If the contents flow out freely when the trigger is pumped, then there are no problems and you are ready to begin applying. To prevent the contents from flowing though, just simply release the pressure by flicking the locking button on the push rod with your thumb, and pulling out the caulking gun plunger slightly by hand if need be.
If however pressure builds up but nothing flows out, then it could be a matter of three things causing the problem. If the hole is not pierced correctly and the seal inhibits the flow, then the adhesive won't expel from the tube and the trigger becomes solid. This you can easily see by unscrewing the plastic cone nozzle from the tube if the thin metal film has been pierced.
If the hole is visible, then either your gun is not suited for squeezing out the contents and you will need one which can apply more pressure, or the contents of the tube are out of date and solidified beyond use. Caulking should have a sell-buy or use-buy date stamped onto the tube, and most likely you will find it on the plunger insertion. So, be careful when buying any caulking product, and make sure you do not purchase old stock from your hardware supplier. These things do happen, and at the cost of your own expense.
Matt is a proud husband and father of a 2 1/2 year old daughter, with another little one on the way. He and his wife live in a 60 year old home that he was able to fix up over a few years in his "spare time". With a love for floor tiling and extreme sports, the two don't necessarily mix, but help to add to his outgoing personality and ability to tackle almost any problem.
It took Matt almost 3 years to perfect his book "A Unique Step-By-Step Guide: Making Floor Tiling Easier". He wanted to make it as accessible as possible for people of all varying degrees of experience.
