I spent two weeks in Ecuador in 2006, and I am now planning a move to live there most of the year and obtain residency. Yes, it really is that wonderful!
Quito, Ecuador, the capital city, is located directly on the equator, but since the city is in the Andes Mountains at over 9,000 feet, it has a fairly temperate climate. The daily highs and lows are very constant with highs around 70 and the lows near 50. This is a pretty small country, so travel to the beach or the Amazon basin for warmer temperatures, if desired, is a breeze. Just imagine, springtime weather all year round, and it's beautiful as you might imagine with that climate, most of the roses found in shops around the world are grown just outside of Quito.
The city is nearly 25 miles long and about 3 miles wide, it is a very impressive sight from the air, with streets and buildings winding through the foothills of the mountains, and farms seen atop many mesas. An active volcano, Pinchicha, towers over the west end of the city, with others also visible, Cotapoxi, to the north is the most magnificent.
As the very first UNESCO World Heritage Site, Quito earned this distinction because of the preservation of it's colonial past. Despite several large earthquakes the colonial center of the city is impressive, and beautiful with over 6 large churches dating back to the Spanish occupation. Many other grand colonial era buildings and a central plaza are surrounded by monuments, cobblestone streets and exotic plants. The old plaza originally built and used by the Incas is still intact.
In the north is the new, modern area of Quito, with high-rise buildings, an international airport, shopping centers, modern condominium housing, and the financial district. Even in this modern part of Quito you will find small local markets, outdoor bazaars, and street vendors selling everything from Panama hats (actually made in Ecuador, not Panama), to wonderful Tagua nut carvings, beautiful weavings, and luscious Alpaca sweaters.
But beware, you won't often find change for a $20 when shopping, or even a $10. Ecuador has adopted the US dollar as it's official currency, and because of the low cost in the country, $1 bills are in very short supply, if you need change you will likely be carrying around a lot of Susan B Anthony and Sacagawea dollar coins.

Lewis and Clark Expedition People: Sacagawea, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, John Colter, York $19.54 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 28. Chapters: Sacagawea, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, John Colter, York, Toussaint Charbonneau, Patrick Gass, Alexander Hamilton Willard, Charles Floyd, George Shannon, Peter M. Weiser, Pierre Cruzatte, George Drouillard, John Ordway, Nathaniel Hale Pryor, Cameahwait, Old Toby, John Newman, Richard Windsor, Joseph Field, John Dame, Reubin Field. Excerpt: Sacagawea (also Sakakawea, Sacajawea; English pronunciation: see below); (c. 1788 - December 20, 1812; see below for other theories about her death) was a Lemhi Shoshone woman, who accompanied the Lewis and Clark Expedition, acting as an interpreter and guide, in their exploration of the Western United States. She traveled thousands of miles from North Dakota to the Pacific Ocean between 1804 and 1806. She has become an important part of the Lewis and Clark mythology in the American public imagination. The National American Woman Suffrage Association of the early twentieth century adopted her as a symbol of women's worth and independence, erecting several statues and plaques in her memory, and doing much to spread the story of her accomplishments. In 2000, the United States Mint issued the Sacagawea dollar coin in her honor, depicting Sacagawea and her son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau. The face on the coin was modeled on a modern Shoshone-Bannock woman named Randy'L He-dow Teton. No contemporary image of Sacagawea exists. Reliable historical information about Sacagawea is very limited. She was born into an Agaidika (Salmon Eater) tribe of Lemhi Shoshone between Kenney Creek and Agency Creek about twenty minutes away from present-day Salmon in Lemhi County, Idaho. In 1800, when she was about twelve, she and several other girls were kidnapped by a group of Hidatsa (also known as Minnetarees) in a battle that resulted in death among the Shoshone of four ... |
