Finland`s Wonderful Waters A Visitors Guide
There is no better way to enjoy the Finnish summer than from a boat. The options are endless; you can take inland or shoreline cruises going through the vast Lakeland labyrinth, archipelago, locks or rivers.
The coastline of southern Finland provides a unique cruise route taking you from Mariehamn in the western land archipelago, through the past and present capitals of Turku and Helsinki, to the town of Kotka in the east.
Lakeland adventures in Finland range from short expeditions lasting a couple of hours to leisurely tours with cabin accommodation that may last several days. The choice of vessels includes quaint lake steamers and open-top motor cruisers ideal for sightseeing.
One popular option is to take a three night- cruise on Lake Saimaa with stopovers at some of Lakeland`s most charming towns. Alternatively, why not explore the Czars` route along the beautiful coastal line and visit one of the many beautiful islands scattered along the way.
In just one day you can experience the joys of the century old Heinvesi route, take a riverboat to a reindeer farm or embark on a sunny cruise along the West coast. If you fancy going further afield, there is an entire fleet of stylish, fast and safe cruise ferries to Stockholm and Tallinn.
If you`d rather explore the Finnish waterways by yourself, there are plenty of opportunities to hire sailing or motorboats. Finland`s coastline and vast network of inland waterways provide endless opportunities for boating of every kind. However, the rugged nature of the islands and the irregular shorelines present challenges for sailors, and you need to make various preparations if you are planning an expedition by sea.
If you need help, you can always contact the Finnish Maritime Administration, which produces charts for all different types of sailing. Once you set off, throughout Finland, you`ll find a wide range of guest and nature harbours. One particularly spectacular route takes you along the Saimaa canal and through eight locks, all the way via Russia to the Gulf of Finland.
Finland is a fantastic place to visit and I would highly recommend a trip out there for anyone wishing to sample a true European city. I for one love Finland and encourage everyone to visit this wonderful country at least once, you will be surprised. If you do visit, then perhaps you could stop by and say hello, there is always a warm welcome here in Finland.

The History of Finland $51.06 Finland has occupied the political, religious, cultural and economic border between eastern and western Europe since prehistoric times. Despite its peripheral location, the country has found itself in the mainstream of developments that created modern Europe, such as nationalism, world wars, industrialization, and the current political and economic integration. The first evidence of human life in Finland began sometime in the millennium 7,000-8,000 B.C. when small, tribal groups populated the area. In 1155, Finland became a part of the Swedish kingdom, when most of the Finnish peninsula came under the rule of the Swedish king. Finland was annexed to Russia as a result of wars between the Swedish king and Russian rulers in 1809, bringing about the Age of Autonomy or Imperial Era. The Age of Independence came when Finland's leaders declared the country's political independence in 1917 as a result of turmoil in Russia after World War I. Finland, along with several newly independent countries, had to find its place in the new Europe. The country not only did that, but created a secure and prosperous country during times of turmoil. It has emerged into a place of privilege, with high levels of prosperity, cultural achievements, and social peace. Ideal for students and general readers, the History of Finland is part of Greenwood's Histories of Modern Nations series. With over thirty nation's histories in print, these books provide readers with a concise, up-to-date history of countries throughout the world. Reference features include a biographical section highlighting notable figures in Finland's history, a timeline of important historical events, and a bibliographical essay. |

Finland in the Second World War: Between Germany and Russia $139.08 This book describes the struggle for power between two totalitarian dictatorships in the north of Europe and the battle for survival of a small nation caught between them. In the Winter War of 1939-40, Finland successfully fought off a Soviet invasion. Then, with no one to turn to but Germany, it became the only democratic state in the Axis powers. Ultimately, it succeeded in extricating itself from the war and, despite the shadow of Russia looming over it, averted a communist takeover. |

The Winter War: Russia's Invasion of Finland, 1939-1940 $13.59 When Russia invaded Finland in November 1939, the international community reacted with shock and outrage, and yet did not come to their aid. The results of the invasion seemed to be a forgone conclusion, as the Soviet army was reputed to be one of the best in the world, with nearly complete air supremacy, and the Finns were outnumbered four to one. But the Finns did not collapse under Soviet pressure, and their doomed but valiant defense is only dwarfed by the events at Thermopylae. Edwards also addresses the geopolitical consequences of the Russian embarrassment-most notably, the change in German opinion of the capabilities of the Red Army, which would lead to Operation Barbarossa two years later. |

SouthEastern Finland Fortification System $63.73 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. SouthEastern Finland fortification system is an extensive defensive system formed by three concentric fortress chains in SouthEast Finland built by Russia in 1790s. The purpose of the fortification system was to protect the capital of the Russian Empire, Saint Petersburg, from a possible Swedish attack. Before the SouthEastern Finland fortification system was built, the defence of the Russian controlled SouthEast Finland or Old Finland in 18th century relied mainly on the fortresses captured from Sweden. Russia had acquired the medieval castles in Vyborg (Viipuri) and Korela (K kisalmi) in the Treaty of Nystad 1721. In the 1743 Treaty of bo Sweden ceded the 17th century fortress in Lappeenranta and the Hamina fortress built in 1720s as well as the medieval castle of Olavinlinna in Savonlinna to Russia. The only new fortress built by Russia in Old Finland before 1790s was the construction of the first phase of the Taavetti fortress in Luum ki between 17731781. Finland To-Day $32.44 FINLAND TO-DAY BY FRANK FOX AUTHOR OF THE BALKAN PENINSULA, SWITZERLAND, PEEPS AT AUSTRALIA 1 BRITISH EMPIRE, OCEANIA. A. C. BLACK, LTD. 4, 5 6 SOHO SQUARE, LONDON W. i 1926 PREFACE THE Finns what is the key to an understanding of this race, with so much stubborn courage and yet so much cautious prudence so fertile in imagina tion and yet with such a gift for methodical organ ization so strong in race pride and yet able to come from out a long period of subjection to a foreign Power with no painful record of revolts and martyrdoms I have sought that key by a visit to their country and by a study of their history and their art and literature, and can offer to my readers perhaps some clues, certainly not a clear explanation, of a people who remain still to me enigmatic. How can one explain a people who suggest at one time the Japanese, at another the Irish, at another the Scots, at another the Americans, at another the citizens of one of the little states of ancient Greece Certainly they cannot be classified. They are of their own genus. It will be worth while for students of mankind to keep an eye on these Finns not four millions in number if one leaves out of the count emigrants who have already made a small mark in the world and who are destined to make a much greater mark. Fate has placed them athwart Russia, whose development from Bolshevism will give the vi PREFACE chief interest to the future history of the twentieth century and this outpost position will keep Finland prominent on the worlds stage. By character they are eager to try out all those problems of post-war civilization which have to do with the reconciliation of democracy with authority, of capitalism with the rights oflabour, of art with mechanical industry, of womans claim to civic equality with the institution of the family. Both in issues of foreign politics and of social politics, therefore, the world is likely to hear a great, deal of Finland in the future. But I wish to emphasize that this book does not pretend to offer more than a travellers impressions of the Finns and Finland. Statements in it of historical or economic fact are, to the best of my knowledge, accurate. The restcriticisms, opinions, surmises are those of an observer who does not speak the Finnish tongue and had to rely much upon interpreters and Films who spoke English. Fortunately English is very generally spoken by educated Finns with others, inter preters helped. To know what the others i. e. the people of merely elementary education thought was, to my mind, essential. On which point, a memory from another land. I was seeking once to know what the Arabs in a Near East territory were thinking and saying on a certain subject. An excellent interpreter helped PREFACE vii me to get the views of many notables priests, merchants, officials, journalists. But he made a meek protest when I sought his aid to get bazaar gossip at first hand. It was in the days before Angora had made the wearing of a bowler hat a tes |

Finland: Modern Architectures in History $22.99 Buildings speak volumes, not just about their occupants or owners, but about the countries in which they exist. From colonnades to paving stones, the architecture of any building does more than simply date the structure--it celebrates the spirit of a people and a nation. Roger Connah's latest book, "Finland," explores the culture and democratic spirit of a country whose buildings carry the indelible markings of Finland's political and physical climate. Nearly all of the country's buildings were constructed after 1917, when Finland gained its independence from Russia. The resulting architecture--often springing from hugely popular public competitions--is emphatically democratic in structure and usage. Finland's extreme northern latitudes, for their part, have given rise to buildings with an acute sensitivity to the physical environment and to the delicate interplay of light and shadow. From museums to schools to subsidized housing developments, Connah's "Finland" is an important survey of the country's architecture. Fully illustrated and with detailed examinations of many of the Finnish master architects--including Alvar Aalto--it is also a valuable contribution to the studies of modern architecture and Nordic history. |
