Run Star

Let me tell you a quick story. There is a certain movie star* from the olden days that I have always idolized. Several years ago, before the glut of fan magazines like People and Us, etc., you had to read about famous people in publications like Look and Life magazines. When a featured story about this lady was published, and included her so called "beauty secrets" I devoured the article and was quick to adopt her advice on creams for getting rid of dry skin.
You may be surprised to know that she didn't use expensive creams for getting rid of dry skin. And she didn't recommend any "fancy" (back then) natural topical creams for dry skin. She used petroleum jelly. And she used it after her bath or shower, combined with the water left on her skin from deliberately not toweling off. Her advice had such a folksy, "down home" feel to it, and since her looks were always described as "wholesome" I thought her advice had to be sound.
Looking back on it now its fairly laughable. A beautiful, wealthy movie star with a stable full of make up artists, cosmeticians and lighting experts at her disposal and she chooses to use a product made from the same substance that produces gasoline!
It would seem that this movie star wasn't the only one who thought that it was ok to use petroleum jelly on your skin. For a very long time, manufacturers of creams for getting rid of dry skin have continued to use mineral oil, aka, liquid paraffin, paraffin wax, and petrolatum in their products. And while they do give you soft skin in the short run, in the long run they clog your pores, prevent your skin from "breathing" and make it difficult for your skin to eliminate toxins...which it was designed to naturally do.
As consumers, we're making an effort to move away from old style thinking and are becoming more educated about what goes into our skin care products. Fortunately, we are beginning to realize that creams for getting rid of dry skin are only going to be effective in a healthy way, if they are made from natural ingredients. It won't be long before we demand that companies make only natural topical creams for dry skin, and stop making products that are loaded with synthetic chemicals, like parabens, alcohol, dioxane and chemically-produced fragrances.
Some of the best, healthiest creams for getting rid of dry skin that I have found contain ingredients that are 100% natural, like avocado and macadamia oil. These are rich, natural oils that are safely absorbed into your skin and give you soothing, long-lasting relief from dry skin. And you can feel confident applying these natural topical creams for dry skin knowing that they are as safe as if you ate them.
And while we're at it, soft skin shouldn't be your only concern when choosing skin care products with natural ingredients. Besides moisturizing your skin, its important to treat and repair the damage that comes from getting older and being exposed to wind and sun.
Natural ingredients like Vitamin E, exotic kelp ( phytessence wakame), keratin (Cynergy TK) and CoQ10 (Nano-Lipobelle H-EQ10) which are found in the best natural topical creams for dry skin will also go to work at at your skin's cellular level to boost your natural production of collagen and elastins. So not only will your skin be moist and soft, but it will be firm and youthful.
The moral of my story: Don't believe everything your favorite movie star tells you. These famous people have lots of professionals on hand to make them look young and beautiful. So any beauty advice they hand out, such as the best creams for getting rid of dry skin, has to be examined with an educated eye. And now that you've been educated, with some smart comparison shopping, the best natural topical creams for dry skin can be yours. You can take it from me...even though I'm not a movie star.
*I haven't mentioned her name because she is still living and I don't want to show any disrespect.

Home Run $3.95 An all-star collection of the best fiction and nonfiction writing about baseball's most exciting moment The game of baseball is full of moments of greatness. But no moment during a game elicits the roar of the crowd as does the hitting of a home run. And, as witnessed during the past few seasons, home-run fever has swept the fans and the players. Now George Plimpton, famed sports amateur and chronicler of the game of baseball-among many other sports-collects the best writing about the moment a home run is hit. From a memoir of Ted Williams's 1946 All-Star game homer to a fictional visit Babe Ruth made to Lake Wobegon, from Mark McGwire's 69th and 70th home runs to Hank Aaron's pursuit of the Babe's record to Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World," we see the effects on the athletes and the fans of that ineffable moment when wood hits leather and the ball sails out over the stands. This delightful and absorbing collection is the most complete, most authoritative, and most compelling assemblage of home-run writing ever put together. Includes glorious prose by John Updike, Don DeLillo, Roger Angell, Paul Gallico, Grantland Rice, Red Smith, Robert Creamer, Garrison Keillor, Donald Hall, Rick Reilly, and Rick Telander, among others. |

Rabbit, Run $11.99 Rabbit, Run is the book that established John Updike as one of the major American novelists of his—or any other—generation. Its hero is Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom, a onetime high-school basketball star who on an impulse deserts his wife and son. He is twenty-six years old, a man-child caught in a struggle between instinct and thought, self and society, sexual gratification and family duty—even, in a sense, human hard-heartedness and divine Grace. Though his flight from home traces a zigzag of evasion, he holds to the faith that he is on the right path, an invisible line toward his own salvation as straight as a ruler’s edge. |

The Cannonball Run - $5.99 Burt Reynolds and director Hal Needham team up for the fourth time, this time bringing an all-star cast of characters on a cross-country car race in the vein of 1976 release The Gumball Rally. The police are the least of the Cannonballers' worries as they push the pedal to the metal in a race from Connecticut to California. Reynolds stars as J.J. McClure, a speed-loving racer disguised as an ambulance driver to outsmart the police. He is paired up with Dom Deluise, who plays his dimwitted sidekick Victor and who, on occasion, dons the suit of Captain Chaos. Rat Packers Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr. join the lineup as Ferrari-driving priests, while martial arts expert Jackie Chan takes on one of his first U.S. film roles driving a souped-up Subaru. Among the many other stars are Roger Moore doing a parody of his 007 character, complete with secret devices and weapons, Farrah Fawcett as Pamela, a woman McClure and Chaos pick up, and Jamie Farr as a deranged Islamic sheik. Jack Elam joins the cast as a crazed proctologist along for McClure's ambulance ride, and Needham makes a cameo as a patient. ~ Rachel Koetje, Rovi |
