Is it a waste of life if we don't make our dreams come true? I believe so, which explains why I built a Roman Chariot, trained the horses and taught myself to drive it. I remember exactly when and where the idea was born. Sitting in our local Odeon with three ten year old friends, I watched wide eyed as Ben Herr fought for the lead in The Collesium. At that time I never imagined I would ever be able to emulate Charlton Heston.
Nearly fifty years later I owned an Equestrian centre in Colchester. Originally Briton's capitol, (prior to London,) before Boudicca in her chariot burnt it down. Also UK's oldest recorded town and once proud possessor of the second largest Roman circus in the world. My speciality was training horses for carriage driving. This followed a career of driving and building racing cars, so I realised that my life had equipped me with all the skills to make that 10 year old's dream become real - using 21st century technology I would build a replica racing chariot. It needed to be light and flexible, so I would make the base structure in 16 gauge round steel tube. This is where the internet came into its own. Using a variety of images and making an inspired guess as to the horse sizes, I drew up the design.
A friend who was a vastly better welder than I, was persuaded to build the chassis in my carriage store. We clad the bare tubes with thin gauge steel sheet and then formed the floor from steel mesh for lightness. The biggest problem was wheels. They had to look authentic and there appeared to be no wheelwrights still building in that flexible mix of ash spokes and oak rims. To make things even more difficult, I wanted the wheels to be shod with a thin rubber "tyre" so the vehicle could be driven on public roads. Without this rubber cushioning, the constant noise and steady impact would restrict my chariot to just soft surfaces.
Again the internet came good. In Cornwall, on the far side of the country, was a wheelwright still using traditional methods. That my two wheels would cost as much as the rest of the project was immaterial. The next brain teaser was a strong method of securing the wheels to the chassis. The chosen system must also include free running bearings to minimise friction. Lightweight car trailer (Indispension) units were the solution. Bought from our local caravan suppliers, the hubs were quickly dispatched to Cornwall to be incorporated within the wheel build.
The pole came next, (the large diameter steel tube that sits between the horses and connects the chariot to their breast harness.) Although an optimist by nature, I wanted a speedy method to separate the horses (plus thrashing steel shod hooves) from me in the chariot, should it all go badly wrong. The answer was tractor technology. A search of agricultural engineers produced a very sturdy quick release coupling designed for farm machinery, to connect pole to chassis.
The next decision was decoration
In Colchester Museum is a near perfect, 2000 year old mosaic depicting a chariot. On each side are displayed two mythical horned sea creatures, they had to included. First the whole vehicle was sprayed gloss black and then turned over to a biker mate, who has a talent for art. Working from a tourist guidebook, he replicated the designs in silver and red. The wheels had now arrived strapped to a pallet. Painted silver with red stars on the hubs, they slid perfectly onto the shafts. The castellated hub nuts were torqued up, their split pins crimped into position - at last I had a rolling chariot to pull around my yard. Next came the job of training two horses for charioteering, plus learn the skill myself!
