Round Coin

Challenge coins are popular collectors' items and have a rich tradition behind them. While they may be intriguing in the display cases where you're likely to see them, the traditional rules of challenging the members of a unit to produce their tokens is even more interesting.

The rules of a challenge may vary from one unit to another, but the basics generally hold true. All the members of the military unit are to have their medallions on their persons at all times. As a way of encouraging morale, any member of the unit may challenge his or her fellows to produce their coins at any time.

To initiate this challenge, the individual produces his or her own medallion, signaling that the other members of the unit must do the same. Often, the challenger will openly slap the token down on the bar or table or loudly rap the medallion against a surface for all to notice and respond accordingly. The challenger may also "accidentally" drop his or her coin to signal the other members of the unit that a challenge has been made.

All those being challenged must immediately produce their own coins in response to the challenge. Those who have been caught off guard and cannot present their tokens must buy a round of drinks for the challenger and the others who passed the challenge. If all of the challenged members of the unit are able to produce their challenge coins, the challenger is responsible for buying a round of drinks for the entire group.
