TaylorMade rac Satin TP Wedge
Finding the right wedge is something that is very essential to your golf game and score and also something that's sometimes difficult. After searching and trying several wedges, I found something I really liked in TaylorMade's RAC wedges. After hearing about their new Tour Preferred version of the wedge, I had to give it a try considering my high feelings on the original. When TaylorMade rolled out the first RAC TP wedges, they were only available in their dark gunmetal finish. I was fine with that, considering my RAC wedges were also the dark finish.
I really liked the look of the Black TP wedge, but had a slight issue with the weight. You see, I like a wedge with a little heft. I like the little extra weight because it helps you accelerate through the ball easier and helps you eliminate "floppy wrists". In addition, Taylor Made also cut what they called "Y Cutter" grooves that put increased spin on the ball. This year, TM released the wedge in their Satin finish, which is very similar to chrome but without the glare.
On the Course
Even through the original TP wedge wasn't exactly my cup of tea because of the weight, I was very interested in giving the Satin version a try. Unfortunately, after hitting a couple of balls, I could tell it was the same wedge with a different finish. It still was just a touch light on the scales. However, I could still see the things this wedge does well.
The Y-Cutter grooves really put the bite on the ball. I noticed even little delicate chip shots had more bite than normal. It also allows you to stop it on a dime on full swings and bunker shots. Also another trait shared between the two TP wedges is their good looks. The wedges are nicely sized and rounded to create confidence at address. I also like how the soles are chiseled on the rear half to increase the TP's versatility. I could easily hit flops with the face open or any other type of specialty shot with the well contoured sole.
Final Thoughts
The TM RAC Satin Wedge isn't quite my cup of tea, but that certainly doesn't mean it won't be yours. With a little bit heavier head, this would be my ideal wedge. If weight isn't an issue or you like lighter short game tools, either TP wedge could be a perfect match for you.
