As you inevitably gain more cities, however, the administration trickiness grows from tricky to uncontrollable. Owning 10 whole cities under your control can be very tough to manage, and unless you have come up with a plan with what you are going to do with those cities, you may find yourself having a hard time trying to keep up.
Firstly, you should decide what goal you'd like the city to serve. Not every city can be a powerhouse with tons of highly advanced buildings. While your main city should surely be very advanced, at times it is a good idea to just concentrate on just one function for each city. Some smart uses of cities are to focus on earning more gold, more resources, or more military output. How you spend your time creating buildings and researching them will be decided by which of the objectives you hope to achieve most.
One objective is to develop a city whose one function is to generate gold. To amplify how much gold you can accumulate from a city, you'll need to concentrate on building and upgrading lots and lots of cottages to reach as high a population as you can. How much total gold you can acquire is mainly decided by how much citizens you have, so all of your effort in this city should be spent advancing cottages.
