There are two species of red hairy caterpillars both resembling in habits and habitats and are responsible for destroying our agricultural crops. Red hairy caterpillars belong to the genus Amsacta. The two species which are responsible for causing heavy economic loss are A. albistriga and A. moorei. A. albistriga is widely distributed in south India and Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. In the north and central region of India A. moorei is most prevalent. However, both species have been noticed together in the Pollachi tract of Tamil Nadu.
They are polyphagous insects but most commonly prefer to infest groundnut, mung bean and black gram. They also attack sorghum, cotton, castor, millet, pearl millet, ragi, maize, soybean, horse gram, cluster bean and pigeon pea. They are one of the worst pests of groundnut resulting in complete destruction of the crop and heavy economic loss especially in south India. The young caterpillars are known to feed on the under surface of leaves by scrapping the chlorophyll for 4-5 days on the same leaves where eggs were laid. The skeletonized leaves can be easily detected from considerable distances. After attaining a considerable size larvae disperse and feed individually by consuming flowers and leaves. When the caterpillars are present in large numbers then only the base of stem of plant is left resulting in complete loss of the crop.
The adults are medium-sized moths measuring 25 mm across the wing span. Forewings are white in colour and have characteristic black streaks followed by a yellow streak along the anterior margin. Hind wings are also white in colour with persistent black streaks. A yellow coloured band is present on the head. Larvae are initially ash brown in colour but attain reddish colouration when full grown. Black bands are present all over the body in larvae and reddish brown hairs are very prominent all over the body segments and that is why they are called as red hairy caterpillars. Usually mass emergence of moths has been observed with the onset of rainy season. Adults start copulating soon after emergence and oviposition usually occurs in night. A female lays 600-700 eggs or sometimes the number reaches to about 2,300.
Eggs are laid in clusters on the available host plants. Oviposition lasts for 3-4 days and the incubation period of eggs varies from 3-4 days. The caterpillars soon after emergence start feeding on the leaves and remain on the same leaves for a period of 3-5 days. They are voracious feeders and scrap off the chlorophyll from the leaves giving them a papery appearance. Larval period is of 25-30 days. Pupation takes place in soil at a depth of 10-20 cm under trees, hedges, shady corners or bunds. Pupae remain in diapause stage in the soil till the next season. Only one generation has been recorded in a year. In Tamil Nadu a short cycle has been observed where the larvae of early emergence pupate and emerge after short pupal period and infest crops. The egg masses and the larvae may be manually picked and destroyed. Trenches may be formed so the movement of larvae may become restricted. Trap crops may be encouraged. Parasitoids are now also available so they can be used for reducing the attack of red hairy caterpillars.
