The values of antique violins have rapidly accelerated, staying strong in the first decade of the 21st century. Capital growth has been consistent, and they have come under the radar of both institutional and private investors, rather than just knowledgeable musicians and antiques experts. A correction in prices has never come. These violins have not experienced a decrease in prices for decades. For contrarians, this could be a warning sign, but for others it indicates a level of sophistication in the market because until recently the price increases have not been astronomical.
The internet has made investment in violins much easier, though. It has attracted the attention of the serious investor who can find all the knowledge required to locate and identify rare examples in both the violin and cello market. Stradivari and Guarneri del Gesu are the two most famous and highly respected manufactuers. There only around eight hundred violins, violas and cellos remaining in the world produced by these master craftsmen. Some have been stolen, some have been unfortunately lost to fire and other accidents, but many are secured in private and museum collections and will never be sold.
The problems with investing in violins
- There are no dividends paid - when you own a violin your money is dead money and you rely on capital gain (and the 'greater fool' theory) when you come to sell (assuming you have an exit strategy for your investment).
- Antique violins are susceptible to damp conditions, therefore a good dehumidifier is required to keep the storage room dry and at a consistent temperature.
- Insurance providers may be reluctant to insure them for what you think they are worth, and insurance is yet another cost that saps the returns.
The upside: antique violins should remain popular
As well as being functional, antique instruments have aesthetic value. The best collectors items will be from the most celebrated master craftsmen and will therefore play beautifully. Concert violin players know the pleasure of playing on an instrument that is superior, and many will have violins that are valued at several hundred thousand dollars or more that are used for performance or in the recording studio. Antique violins are a sort of elitist purchase; they are not on the radar of the average investor, and therefore there's kudos in owning one, as long as you have chosen wisely.
If you can't afford several hundred thousand (or several million) dollars, there are a number of funds that allow access to violin ownership for a low price - typically ten thousand dollars. While violins have only returned between 3-4% over the past two centuries, this is a full percentage point better than US Treasury Bonds. Recently, though, these returns have accelerated and prices have been improving up to 15% per annum as more of the rare examples are essentially locked away forever in either private collections or in museums.
China could be the key to this market really booming, though. Chinese violinists, who exist in great numbers, will influence the price of antique violins over the coming years. Be aware that there may be a bubble, though - purchase sensibly, purchase for the right reasons, and have an exit strategy. Once everyone starts talking about investing in antique violins, you know the market is probably in a bubble.
Picking the right recording studio to record a violin comes partly down to the recording equipment, and partly to whether the engineer will have a sympathetic ear to the instrument, according to Michael Lincoln, a seasoned musician. You will need a high quality rack or stand for your violin as well, while it's not in use, and keep it in a room with a quality dessicant dehumidifier to avoid damage through dampness.

Excerpt: Ady Gil, previously known as Earthrace, was a 78-foot (24 m), wave-piercing trimaran, which was originally created as part of a project to break the world record for circumnavigating the globe in a powerboat. The vessel was powered by biodiesel fuel, but was also capable of running on regular diesel fuel. It used other eco-friendly materials, such as vegetable oil lubricants, hemp composites, and non-toxic anti-fouling, and had features such as bilge water filters. The first attempt at the global circumnavigation record in 2007 was ill-fated. The boat several times encountered mechanical problems, and collided with a Guatemalan fishing boat, killing one of the other boat's crew. While the crew of the Earthrace was later absolved of any responsibility, the delay forced the restart of the record attempt, while more mechanical issues later aborted it. In 2008, the second journey proved successful - though again, numerous technical problems had to be overcome before the record was achieved, with the vessel finally making the return to Sagunto,... Excerpt: Prostitution and brothel keeping are legal in New Zealand. Pimping (deriving financial gain from the prostitution of another) is also legal. Street prostitution is also permitted. Prior to 2003, prostitution in New Zealand was governed by the Massage Parlours Act 1978, which allowed some indoor prostitution under a facade; indoor sex workers were required to be registered with the police. Advertising the sale of sex ('soliciting'), running a brothel, and living from the earnings of prostitution were illegal. These laws were changed by the Prostitution Reform Act, which was passed by the narrowest margin in June 2003. The decriminalisation of brothels, pimping and soliciting and substitution of a minimal regulatory model created worldwide interest. Although prior to 2003 New Zealand had several laws meant to suppress prostitution, in practice, during the last decades of the 20th century, there had been a high degree of toleration of the sex trade. The New Oxford History of New Zealand $95.35 The New Oxford History of New Zealand is a new, multi-authored revisionist history of Aotearoa New Zealand. The book tests the idea that New Zealand history can be explained as a quest for 'national identity' and considers whether narratives that rely on the 'colony-to-nation' storyline are still relevant in the early twenty-first century. The book proposes instead that history and identity have been shaped by culture, community, class, region and gender, and that these have been more important than ideas of evolving nationhood. Above all, this new book responds to the need for a general re-interpretation of the 'big picture' of New Zealand history. All the chapters in this book feature new and previously unpublished research, informed by international as well as interdisciplinary scholarship and in keeping with the aim of the book to set the agenda for future historical research imperatives. Chapters showcase research that explores trans-national, comparative and regional contexts. The New Oxford History of New Zealand adopts a thematic approach to re-reading history. It takes a number of discrete topics as case studies and highlights particular incidents and stories to illustrate points of interest. A chronological structure within each chapter complements the overall thematic approach of the volume to enhance the book's utility as a teaching resource. The book also takes a slightly broader geographical definition of what constitutes 'New Zealand', locating Aotearoa New Zealand in wider international and regional contexts. |
