Exploring Aviation in Central Florida: Attractions Offering Flying Fun For The Entire Family
Central Florida attractions have plenty to offer visitors and residents of all ages. Beautiful gardens, thrilling amusement parks, historic buildings and museums, fine eateries, and live entertainment from around the globe. However, for some, that simply is not enough. Every year, thousands flock to Polk County for the numerous aviation events that fill the streets, the skies, and the imagination. The flight of fancy that brings visitors to Polk County will have them doing more than sky diving in Florida. There are hot air balloon rides, flight simulators, restoration demonstrations, flight museums, air shows, fly-ins, and flying lessons for anyone who is interested!
Take To The Skies
Not all of Central Florida's attractions are found on the ground. For the adventurous, there are hang gliding and sky diving in Florida, even for beginners. Wallaby Ranch is the first year-round aerotow hang gliding park in the world. Using the latest tandem aerotowing techniques, guests thrill to the safest, most exciting hang gliding experience available. If you prefer an old time biplane ride, head for Waldo Wright's Flying Service or Preston's Aviation. If visitors are interested in earning their own wings, Preston's Aviation is the place to go.
See how vintage planes are restored and then watch them take to the sky at Fantasy of Flight. Take a walk through tour of a WWII B-17, or pilot a hot air balloon, a hang glider, or an airplane in the simulators before heading back outside for aerial demonstrations. Guests can also choose to ride in an open cockpit biplane or hot air balloons. You can even take the controls on a 1940 Boeing Stearman plane while in the air.
You and your family can take a break from all the excitement and step back in time at the Museum Room at the Bartow Airport Terminal Building. Featuring memorabilia from WWII, the Bartow Air Base Museum offers aficionados plenty to look at before heading back outside.
37th Annual Sun 'n Fun International Fly-In & Expo
Offering one of the most exciting and extensive flight related events to be found anywhere, Polk County's 37th annual Sun 'n Fun International Fly-In & Expo will take place March 29th through April 3, 2011. Featuring the Blue Angels, this centennial celebration of naval aviation is sure to have something for everyone! Workshops, displays, competition, ride hoppers, even a parts exchange will make this a unique event.
Take To The Sky!
There are several other Central Florida attractions that involve vintage airplanes. Mustangs & Mustangs is just such an event. This exciting phenomenon at Fantasy of Flight occurs on April 2, 2011, as Ford Mustang cars provide the floor show and P-51 WWII fighter planes take to the skies with aerial demonstrations, exhibits, and entertainment. Later in the year, visitors can watch or participate as vintage aircraft, classic racing boats, and other rare, exotic cars and motorcycles compete for best of show and fastest of the pack at the annual Roar n' Soar being held November 12th and 13th, 2011.

Thiggens is sixteen when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. He agrees with his mother to complete the school year 1942-1943 if she will sign his enlistment papers. He goes through boot camp at Farragut, Idaho, and is transferred to Shoemaker, California, to await orders to ship overseas. On his eighteenth birthday he boards the SS Eugene Skinner for the South Pacific; and after 23 days he arrived in New Caledonia. There he attends a Fleet Radio School, works for a time at the COMSOPAC Service Squadron; and, after almost a year on this island, he finally gets a transfer to a wooden subchaser, which is headed north into the War Zone. There are five subchasers in Noumea Harbor being converted to LCC's (landing craft, communications); and because they each have a Walt Disney cartoon character painted on their bridges, they are nicknamed "MacArthur's Donald Duck Navy." The Mighty Eighth in WWII: A Memoir $19.04 On an early morning in the fall of 1942, Kemp McLaughlin's group set out for a raid on a French target. Immediately after dropping its bombs, McLaughlin's plane was hit. WWII Diary of a German Soldier $27.05 I was born and raised in Germany. After my father's death, my mother spent many winters with my husband and I here in Florida. During these visits, she and I transcribed my father's World War II diaries into German from the old "Gabelsberger" shorthand, which only Mama was able to read. Subsequently, I translated them into English. These diaries fortunately were discovered by my sister Sigrid in the attic upon the sale of the old family home after my father's passing in 1989. She felt Mama and I should translate these books for the family. At a later point many friends and acquaintances encouraged me, to publish this diary, to document his thoughts, experiences, and innermost feelings from the beginning of his conscripted military service in 1939 through 1946, when he returned home after being released from a French POW labor camp. During the latter part of 1946 and into 1947, an epilog describes his daily struggles to return to normalcy, the resumption of his teaching career, and the search for food to feed his family. He describes his touching love for his family, as well as his anger and hatred for the insane war and its inept leaders. A war, he was forced to participate in as an ordinary German soldier. Many times he naively commented very unfavorably, sometimes using "choice words" about Hitler, the Nazi Party, and his superiors, a risk, if found out, could have cost him his life. I myself have many memories of the war and its horrors as a little girl without a father, spending night after night in a bunker, the "liberation" of our small town by the Americans. This has left deep and lasting impressions on me. Later on, I met a wonderful American with whom I fell in love andmarried, with my father proudly walking me down the aisle. This, in spite of the resentment he held against Americans, for shamefully turning him over to the French as a forced labor POW.
