Although they are confusingly similar in looks and their size, Winter White Russian Dwarf Hamsters, Raborovski's Dwarf Hamster and Campbell's Dwarf Hamster are actually distinct species. Here is how to differentiate them.
The Russian Dwarf Hamsters come in different sizes. The Raborovski Dwarf Hamster is a tiny creature which can be as small as four centimeters. Campbell's Russian Dwarf Hamsters and Raborovski Dwarf Hamsters are both eight to ten centimeters in length.
The Winter White Russian Dwarf Hamster is the most interesting and the most rare Russian Dwarf Hamster specie. They take their name from their amazing ability to change colors during the winter months, so that they blend in with the snow. This prevents their predators from catching them as they are usually dark colored.
So amazingly, even when you keep them as pets at home, they turn white when they do not get exposed to natural sun. However, if they are mostly indoors and therefore only able to receive light from lamps and bulbs, they will not change color.
Djungaria is a region in Mongolia where Campbell's Russian Dwarf Hamsters or Djungarias as they are alternatively called, are found. Djungarias are the easiest to breed, hence their popularity. Pet breeders also experiment with combining different-colored Djungarias, hence the prevalence of lilac, blue, polka-dot and mottled dwarf hamsters.
The third and smallest kind of Russian Dwarf Hamsters are the Roboroski, which are all the way from Mongolia and China. Their distinctive features are their sand brown color and gray undercoats. They have long legs and they are very prissy.
Owing to their small size, they must be kept in cages where they cannot slip past the bars. Better to have no bars at all and keep them in plastic or glass containers. They are the most sanitary creatures and like to groom and bathe themselves regularly.
Despite their differences, these Russian Dwarf Hamsters all need the same standard of care. Their cages have to be cleaned weekly, and you need to add fresh substrate every week. They should also be fed regularly with oats, seed or veggies and must be given fresh water continuously.
These amazing and agile balls of fur are escape artists who incidentally love a good work out. In order to provide them with their daily work out without losing them, get a hamster ball. This ensures that they get their exercise outside the confines of their cages, but in an enclosed space. Just keep the hamster ball away from the stairs and all will be well.
Chris Copeland is an expert on Dwarf Hamsters. If you want to learn more about Dwarf Hamsters you should check out his great information on dwarf hamster care at [http://dwarfhamsters.net/] or read his book at [http://dwarfhamsters.net/tips]

A Russian Journal $6.61 Just after the Iron Curtain fell on Eastern Europe, John Steinbeck and acclaimed war photographer Robert Capa ventured into the Soviet Union to report for the New York Herald Tribune. This rare opportunity took the famous travelers not only to Moscow, Kiev, and Stalingrad but through the countryside of the Ukraine and the Caucasus. First published in 1948, A Russian Journal is the distillation of their journey and remains today a remarkable memoir and unique historical document. What they saw and movingly recorded in words and on film was what Steinbeck called "the great other side there ... (the) private life of the Russian people." Steinbeck and Capa recorded the grim realities of factory workers, government clerks, and peasants, as they emerged from the rubble of World War II. Like the characters of Steinbeck's fiction, these Russian portraits are endowed with a basic human nobility. Through it all, as the travelers cope with train delays and cramped lodgings, we are given intimate glimpses of the two artists at the height of their powers, answering their need to document human struggle. Wonderfully illustrated with 70 photographs, A Russian Journal is a classic piece of reportage and travel writing. |

The Syntax of Russian $110.67 The study of Russian is of great importance to syntactic theory, due in particular to its unusual case system and its complex word order patterns. This book provides an essential guide to Russian syntax and examines the major syntactic structures of the language. It begins with an overview of verbal and nominal constituents, followed by major clause types, including null-copular and impersonal sentences, WH-questions and their distribution, and relative and subordinate clauses. The syntax behind the rich Russian morphological case system is then described in detail, with focus on both the fairly standard instances of Nominative, Accusative and Dative case as well as the important language-specific uses of the Genitive and Instrumental cases. The book goes on to analyze the syntax of 'free' word order for which Russian is famous. It will be of interest to researchers and students of syntactic theory, of Slavic linguistics and of language typology. |

Russian Myths $15.01 The coming of Christianity to the state of Kievan Rus' at the end of the tenth century had an enormous impact on the development of Russian civilization. Despite the abandonment of the pagan gods, both Christian and pagan practices and beliefs continued to coexist for centuries, producing a system known as "dual faith." Russian Myths deals with mythic beliefs, notions, and customs-- concerning the veneration of earth, water, fire, and air, demons and spirit-beings in the world of nature, the cult of the dead, and witchcraft-- many of which have their roots in the pre-Christian past but still survive to the present day. To illuminate the evolution of major themes and motifs and set Russian myths in the context of mythology the world over, Elizabeth Warner draws upon a rich variety of sources, including anecdotal narrative forms and religious legends, epic songs, funeral laments and folk religion, and, of course, the folktales where the sacred gives way to pure imagination in the depiction of mythic themes and characters. |

Russian Literature $34.87 For most English-speaking readers, Russian literature consists of a small number of individual writers - nineteenth-century masters such as Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Turgenev - or a few well-known works - Chekhov's plays, Brodsky's poems, and perhaps Master and Margarita and Doctor Zhivago from the twentieth century. The medieval period, as well as the brilliant tradition of Russian lyric poetry from the eighteenth century to the present, are almost completely terra incognita, as are the complex prose experiments of Nikolai Gogol, Nikolai Leskov, Andrei Belyi, and Andrei Platonov. Furthermore, those writers who have made an impact are generally known outside of the contexts in which they wrote and in which their work has been received. In this engaging book, Andrew Baruch Wachtel and Ilya Vinitsky provide a comprehensive, conceptually challenging history of Russian literature, including prose, poetry and drama. Each of the ten chapters deals with a bounded time period from medieval Rus' to the present. In a number of cases, chapters overlap chronologically, thereby allowing a given period to be seen in more than one context. To tell the story of each period, the authors provide an introductory essay touching on the highpoints of its development and then concentrate on one biography, one literary or cultural event, and one literary work, which serve as prisms through which the main outlines of a given period's development can be discerned. Although the focus is on literature, individual works, lives and events are placed in broad historical context as well as in the framework of parallel developments in Russian art and music |

Russian Dolls $24.64 Russian Dolls is a novel with a large framework as a woman of today uncovers the tale of her maiden great aunt and a soldier in World War I. In the process, she finds other family stories against which her own experience since she left home stormily at the age of seventeen reverberates. The landscape is as important in this novel as the people, taking the reader from a quiet rural valley to the trenches of war-torn Europe, and closing on a beach where 'the sea crept in and out across the sand flats' and the line between sea and sky is invisible. |
