A 1900 Russian Kopek in 2003 was valued at 50 US Dollars. In today's market a coin that is a proof of the same date is valued as high as 250 US Dollars. A Rouble from the same time period was valued at 200 US Dollars in 2003, and now is valued at 1800 US Dollars and up.
So what is causing the sky rocketing market for Russian Coins? Most in the coin collecting business attribute the explosion to the Russian economy. Over the past decade we have seen the Russian political arena go through marked changes. During this time frame, the economy in Russia plummeted and many of the old coins were actually melted down to be put directly back into the local economy.
This cause a dramatic depletion in the number of authentic Russian coins remaining in circulation. As the economy and political nature in Russia has stabilized and actually begun to recover, the desire for the old coins exploded into a mad frenzy. In fact, currently any Russian Imperial coins can no longer even be exported outside of Russia.
Any coins that are currently outside of Russia are collected by private collectors and are rare. They are so rare in fact that the Yale University Library has jumped on board with a large display of coins on loan to them. Even at Yale however, some coins are being placed in question. With the staggering market for the coins, counterfeiting has become big business. Yale currently has two coins that are being question as authentic or counterfeit. Fake Roubles are showing up every where. The beginning collector can easily be taken in by a fake coin.
So what are the experts saying about this market explosion in Russian Coin Collecting? Will it crash soon or continue to have the unbelievable return rate currently being seen in the market? Looking at the coin collecting market in the United States over the past five years, coins of the same time frame are still valued at a higher dollar value than their counterparts in Russia. Coin collecting in Russia is a relativity new market and is just beginning to develop. This leads most experts to believe that this trend will remain in an upward swing for some time to come.
With that in mind the topic on many coin collecting forums is not on the escalating values of the Rouble but on the counterfeiting business. For new collectors, the reality is that many are trying to exploit the gushing market with worthless fakes. According to Robert Oaks Guide to Beginning Coin Collecting, there are some definite guides to follow before jumping in to buy that "deal" on ebay.
Rarity
Judging the rarity of a coin is a very complicated business. Mintage figures are not always accurate. In the case of the Russian coins, because so many of the coins (and no one knows the exact number) were melted down to infuse the economy, what once was a very common coin, may in fact now be an extremely rare collectors item. How do you tell? Find a reliable source to verify the variety of any coin prior to purchasing it.
Quality
Cons are valued based on their condition. Proof coins are the most valuable of all coins regardless of origin. These coins were designed specifically for collectors. The exclusive design is seen in the number of imprints on the coin. However, most coins have not been preserved properly and even the oils from fingertips can decrease the value of a coin. A simple scratch could cut the value of a particular coin nearly in half.
The old rule of collecting coins is buying the best quality you can afford. It will pay off in the investment. Be sure of the value by taking the coin to a reputable source. There are many associations that specialize in certain eras or countries for coin collectors. Find one that is focused on your area of choice and join it.
Finding the coins
There are many venues to find coins to purchase. A beginner however, should avoid places such as ebay as they can not verify the validity of the coin nor the condition over the internet. Coin dealers, even with their draw backs, can be the safest market for beginners.
There are a few dealers that have professional affiliations. In choosing a dealer look for one that has affiliations such as the PNG (Professional Numismatists Guild), ANA (American Numismatists Association) or the ANS (American Numismatists Society) listed in their business file. These organizations have a reputable history and are great resources for the beginning coin collector.
Joining an organization such as is listed above may be the best investment in your coin collecting adventures.

It is the most up-to-date history available. From its beginnings, through the centuries-long reign of the tsars, the Communist revolution, the years under Stalin, the ascent of Gorbachev and the collapse of Communism, and the economic morass in which Russia finds itself today, this account will help the reader to put the tumultuous history that is Russia into perspective. Ziegler, an expert on Russia, discusses not only the political and economic aspects of each period but its social and cultural milieu as well. Ready-reference materials include a timeline of events in the history of Russia, short biographical notes on key players, and a bibliographic essay. An introductory chapter describes the geographical and demographic features of Russia. Discovering Russia $29.44 Over 200 years, journalists explored Russia to gather enough information so that Americans could form valid opinions about that infamous "riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma." Each generation of American writers rediscovered Russia as national interest in the country waxed and waned. Discovering Russia describes the work of well-known journalists like John Reed, Walter Duranty, Harrison Salisbury, Hedrick Smith and David Remnick as well as remarkable characters whose names and work are nearly forgotten. The cast includes brave reporters, sycophants, naive pilgrims and one reporter-spy. The author concludes that the sum of the journalism done under difficult conditions proved to be remarkably valid, giving Americans the information to form their opinions about Russia. Murray Seeger is a veteran journalist who has worked in Washington, Asia and Europe and Russia and who has studied Russia over 40 years. Of his reporting from Moscow, Time Magazine said, he "offers cross-cultural information in the style of Alistair Cooke." Seeger was a Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard University, won a Loeb Award for reporting economics and has written for many magazines in addition to major newspapers. |

Reeling in Russia $3.95 In the summer of 1996, award-winning journalist Fen Montaigne embarked on a hundred-day, seven-thousand-mile journey across Russia. Traveling with his fly rod, he began his trek in northwestern Russia on the Solovetsky Islands, a remote archipelago that was the birthplace of Stalin's gulag. He ended half a world away as he fished for steelhead trout on the Kamchatka Peninsula, on the shores of the Pacific. His tales of visiting these far-flung rivers are memorable, and at heart, "Reeling in Russia "is far more than a story of an angling journey. It is a humorous and moving account of his adventures in the madhouse that is Russia today, and a striking portrait that highlights the humanity and tribulations of its people. In the end, the reader is left with the memory of haunted northern landscapes, of vivid sunsets over distant rivers, of the crumbling remains of pre-Revolutionary estates, and a cast of dogged Russians struggling to build a life amid the rubble of the Communist regime. |

Russia and the North $27.29 Russia holds more Arctic territory than any other state, yet unlike other Arctic states it does not have a unified strategy identifying economic and political aims for the North. Russia's policies on the North are dispersed across a variety of fields from domestic migration politics to oil and gas development. This volume engages the disparate elements of Russian northern policy and illustrates how the centralized, relatively economically strong and politically assertive Russia of today defines and addresses northern spaces, opportunities, and challenges. As energy markets continue looking northward and climate change renders the Arctic increasingly accessible, the geopolitical interests of Arctic states will be brought more frequently to the forefront. These circumstances will make the disputed borders and overlapping sovereignty claims of the North an important topic in international politics. Given its geographic size and political influence, Russia is and will continue to be a key regional and global actor in the international politics of the North. |

Russia: A History $18.13 Hailed by the Los Angeles Times as "a brisk, exciting tour of Russia's long journey from its Kievan origins," Russia: A History cuts through the myths and mystery that have surrounded this nation from its earliest days, with startling revelations from classified archives that until recently were not even known to exist. A distinguished team of historians has stripped away the propaganda of the past to tell the definitive story of Russia, from tenth-century Kiev and Muscovy through empire and revolution to the fall of Communism and the "new order" of the early 21st century. What emerges is a nation of extremes--of imperial opulence and abject poverty, tyrannical power and subversive resistance, artistic achievement and economic crisis, glittering cities and frozen steppes. A compelling story in its own right, it is essential reading for anyone with an interest in Russia and its place in the world. This new edition has been thoroughly updated to take into account developments under Vladimir Putin. |

Kievan Russia $9.19 Kievan Russia was originally published in a clothbound edition in 1948 as volume two in George Vernadsky's comprehensive series, A History of Russia. It is now available for the first time in a paperbound edition. At the time of its publication Kievan Russia received the following reviews: "The account of this little-know chapter of Russian history is based on a formidable mass of Slavic Byzantine, Germanic, and Oriental (notably Arabic and Persian_ sources. Much of this material is new, and the thorough utilization of all primary and secondary literature accumulated since Kluchevsky wrote his great history easily makes this volume the definitive study of the Kievan period in the English language. There is hardly an aspect of the life of Russia at that time which remains untouched, and the scope of the author's interests and erudition is indeed impressive....When all is said, Vernadsky's filling a definite gap in American historical literature."-The Annals |

Russia in 1913 $12.64 A pivotal year in the history of the Russian Empire, 1913 marks the tercentennial celebration of the Romanov Dynasty, the infamous anti-Semitic Beilis Trial, Russia's first celebration of International Women's Day, the ministerial boycott of the Duma, and the amnestying of numerous prisoners and political exiles, along with many other important events. A vibrant public sphere existed in Russia's last full year of peace prior to war and revolution. During this time a host of voluntary associations, a lively and relatively free press, the rise of progressive municipal governments, the growth of legal consciousness, the advance of market relations and new concepts of property tenure in the countryside, and the spread of literacy were tranforming Russian society. "Russia in 1913 "captures the complexity of the economy and society in the brief period between the revolution of 1905 and the outbreak of war in 1914 and shows how the widely accepted narrative about pre-war late Imperial Russia has failed in significant ways. While providing a unique synthesis of the historiography, Dowler also uses reportage from two newspapers to create a fuller impression of the times. This engaging and important study will appeal both to Russian studies scholars and serious readers of history. |

RECOGNITION OR NON-RECOGNITION 236 XIIL THE OUTLOOK FOR THE FUTURE 253 FOREWORD Russia is the terra incognita of the world today. We make daring and costly efforts in the interests of science to explore the North and South Poles where no man lives, and since Livingstone we have added the Dark Continent to our world of understanding. If we do not know much concern ing these areas at least we have no fatal misinformation about them and no attitudes that hinder correct interpreta tion of any facts we may learn. We have more information about Russia, but we also have more misinformation. fl It is not too much to say that this one-sixth of our planet is the most misunderstood portion of the globe and for good reason. The issues concerned in an almost entirely new social order, based upon a new conception of life, affecting the family and the home, morality and religion, liberty and justice, and involving the contrasts of war or peace, love or hate, violence or non-violence, tolerance or persecution, capi talism or communism, all are so vital and bound upwith our deepest convictions and our most sacred traditions, that im partial and objective judgment in such cases is difficult or almost impossible, Yet there is no country that is more important to under stand or that is likely more profoundly to affect the rest of the world, whether for good or evil, in the coming years and generations. For Russia has come to stay, at least for a very vii viii FOREWORD long time. It is upon us. Whether as a menace, or as a challenge to set our own house in order, or as a vast experi ment which may in time work out some values that may be of use to the rest of humanity, we ought to know what is going on in that section of the world. Yet it is almost as difficult as judging Germany in war time. There is misin formation and false propaganda, often well meaning, on both sides. This book is written in the conviction that Russia consti tutes a challenge to America and the world. Though poles apart, both the friends and foes of the Soviet Union will probably object to some of the statements here made, but the manuscript has been submitted for criticism and correction to experts both in Moscow and New York, to learn whether in point of fact there were any statements that were untrue or unfair, however much both sides may differ as to the |
