Self defense is a lot more than arms and legs flailing about as you make weird sound effects invoking the spirit of Bruce Lee. It's a matter of mind, body and soul acting as one. It's a defensive mechanism brought on by the need to protect yourself.
The attacker needs three things to succeed:
1. Desire
2. Distance
3. Decision
If anyone of these are nullified or exploited in your advantage the attacker will fail. 85% of victims who vibrantly used force to defend themselves on the outset of an attack escape harm. Think about that almost 9 out 10 who were prepared with knowledge, training and a plan escaped harm, how powerful is that!
Forget Enter The Dragon and The Karate Kid please....this is a real world scenario. An attacker or attackers will try and get you at your weakest point, getting into a car, carrying shopping bags etc. You must be prepared to defend and I say defend because you'll be at your weakest when they strike. When they strike most likely they'll try and be as vicious or intimating as possible, they want something it's easier to take it if you're submissive.
Things to remember defend first and be prepared to take the first shot. Second keep your wits about you and fire back after the outset of the attack. Remember those who are aggressive in their defense walk away almost nine times out of ten. You goal is to escape, not maim so always attack the weakest areas of the body. These areas include the eyes, face, neck, groin and stomach. Anything you can exploit...exploit it, anything you can use, use it and don't stay around after you have the upper hand.
In any close quarters training the most important aspect is getting over the fear of possible confrontation. It's normal for us to be scared, intimated or bullied by those who force themselves upon us; it's normal because they act abnormal in this scenario. The easier you accept that if this happens to you that you'll need to fight back and fight back using force the easier you can get into more advanced close quarters combat techniques.
You can learn the in's and out's of self defense as I did. The course I found which is loaded with information and free stuff to get you started is at http://www.closequarterscombat.net. This course is powerful and will get you on the path of the knowledge needed to train and plan for self defense. Most of all it puts you in the driving seat, you will have the confidence to defend the one's you love and protect your property...the know how you find will not fail you! Stay safe and stay alert always.

The Quarters and the Fields: Slave Families in the Non-Cotton South $31.78 "A fresh and inventive method of presenting some lesser-known aspects of slavery to both scholars and students."--Ronald Traylor, Southeastern Louisiana University"Pargas redefines the meaning of 'slave agency' to examine the varying ability of enslaved workers to shape and protect their domestic arrangements."--Larry Hudson, University of Rochester "The Quarters and the Fields" offers a unique approach to the examination of slavery. Rather than focusing on slave work and family life on cotton plantations, Damian Pargas compares the practice of slavery among the other major agricultural cultures in the nineteenth-century South: tobacco, mixed grain, rice, and sugar cane. He reveals how the demands of different types of masters and crops influenced work patterns and habits, which in turn shaped slaves' family life.By presenting a broader view of the complex forces that shaped enslaved people's family lives, not only from outside but also from within, this book takes an inclusive approach to the slave agency debate. A comparative study that examines the importance of time and place for slave families, "The Quarters and the Fields" provides a means for understanding them as they truly were: dynamic social units that were formed and existed under different circumstances across time and space. |

The Servants' Quarters $13.84 Haunted by phantoms of World War II and the Holocaust, young Cressida lives in terror of George Harding, who, severely disfigured, has returned from the front to recover on his family's African estate. When Harding plucks young Cressida's beautiful mother and family from financial ruin, establishing them in the old servants' quarters, Cressida is swept into a life inexorably bound to his. In her new setting, she is conscripted to enliven Harding's nephew, the hopelessly timid Edgar, to make him "wild and daring." She takes on this task with resentful fury, leading the boy astray and, in the process, learning to manipulate the disparities of power, class, and ambition. All the while, Harding himself is watching her. And waiting. "The Servants' Quarters," a complex and sophisticated love story, evokes a vanishing world of privilege with a Pygmalion twist. It is, as Amy Tan said, "Freed's best novel yet." |
