First, let me say welcome to the world of coin collecting! As a serious coin collector, you will need to pick up a few supplies to take care of your coin collection.
There are a lot of choices as far as supplies go - what you need depends on how you want to store and view your collection. Some supplies are geared towards very serious collectors and other supplies are made more for coin enthusiasts or hobbyists. Regardless of which type of collector you are, there are a few supplies that should be used by all coin collectors.
First of all you will need something to hold your coins. There are a great many choices for this including coin sleeves, coin slabs, envelopes, albums, folders, 2x2 holders, proof cases, snap-lock cases, or just a simple air tight container. You may want just a few display cases to showcase your best coins while the rest of your collection can be housed in relatively inexpensive coin envelopes.
Second, you are going to need a good light source to help you look at your coins. You may already have a suitable light source around your house. If not, consider purchasing a powerful desk lamp with a halogen or true daylight type of bulb. Any office supply store should be able to help you find one of these lamps.
Next you will need good quality magnifying glass to be able to see all of the beautiful details of your precious coins. After all, what good are the coins if you can not see them and appreciate all of their intricate detail? What that in mind, purchase the best quality magnifying glass you can afford. Having good optics can greatly improve your ability to see the finer details on your coins.
Lastly, you will need a secure place to store your treasured coin collection when you are not working with it. Many large department stores or office supply stores sell small safes that will protect your coins while you are not working with them. There are many types of safes to choose from including safes that are fireproof. Perhaps even a simple lock-box will get your started.
After you have assembled all of your supplies, it would be nice to have a central location to store everything together. Someplace where you can enjoy viewing your collection without being disturbed.
There are so many supplies to choose from to get started with your new hobby. If you want to start out on a more basic level, consider purchasing a coin album and collecting all of the 50 State Quarters. You don't have to purchase each State Quarter from a coin dealer if you don't want to. You can simply start digging through your spare change and ask family and friends to check their spare change too. This way you can get started collecting coins for a very low cost.
Later, you can build your collection as far as you would like to. Don't be intimidated by all of the fancy and expensive coins at your local coin dealer. Just start out where you feel comfortable and go from there. A bit later down the road, you may discover that you have an incredible coin collection that is very valuable and one that you are extremely proud of too!
